ALTHOUSE, DELMAR PAUL – It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Paul Althouse, 77, of Bedford, Nova Scotia on Saturday May 13th, 2023, at the Victoria General Hospital in Halifax.

Paul leaves behind to mourn his wife of 53 years, Ingrid (Lundrigan); four daughters, Susan, Paula (Colin Fitchett), Nancy, and Holly; two grandchildren, Brandon and Brett Graves; a sister, Nancy Heath (Dick); three sisters-in-law, Gudrid Hutchings, Sigrid Fitzpatrick (William), and Astrid Lundrigan Cohen; as well as Joseph Hutchings, Wayde Graves, Ian Hubbard, many nieces and nephews, great nieces and nephews, and his two beloved dogs, Adore and Whisper. Paul was predeceased by his parents Holland and Mildred (Thurber) Althouse, as well as Ingrid’s parents, Arthur and Ida Lundrigan.

Paul grew up in Kentville, NS. Throughout his youth, he excelled at hockey, baseball, and debating, ultimately discovering his talent in both sport and speech. His hockey abilities led him to Cornell University where his team won the NCAA championship in 1967. Following his undergraduate studies, he attended Law School at Dalhousie University where he met the love of his life, Ingrid. After they married, he articled in St. John’s, NL before moving to Corner Brook where he practiced law for 36 years and was appointed Queen’s Counsel. As a partner at Poole Althouse, his career was built on loyalty and camaraderie as well as business. He was known for creating relationships grounded in mutual respect with colleagues, clients, and opposing counsel alike.

Volunteering in Corner Brook was a large part of Paul’s life. He was Vice-Chair of the Newfoundland and Labrador Association of Youth Serving Agencies, Chancellor of the Anglican Diocese of Western Newfoundland, member of the Rotary Club, played with the Corner Brook Royals, and held various roles with the Corner Brook Hockey Association. He had a life-long love of sports and could often be found at the golf course, on the ski hill, or at the rink. Paul was also known for his gift of gab, telling great stories, and his genuine love of music. He was a natural entertainer and was always singing (some might say he missed his calling as a Broadway Tenor!). With a twinkle in his eye and the confidence to match, his laugh and smile brightened every room. No matter where he was or what he was doing, he loved being around people. This was evident by the lasting connections that he maintained throughout his life.

With all that said, the most precious thing in Paul’s life – what he truly loved most of all - was his family. Above everything else, Paul was a loving and devoted husband, father and grandfather. We will miss him dearly.

Visitation is Thursday, May 18th, 2-5pm and the funeral service is Friday, May 19th, 2pm. Both are at JA Snow Funeral Home, 339 Lacewood Drive, Halifax. The family plans to have a Celebration of Life in Corner Brook at a later date. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to Multiple Systems Atrophy (MSA) or any charity of your choice.
