Obituary of Amelia Elizabeth Rolls
Amelia Elizabeth Rolls
August 31, 1930 – November 22, 2024
Corner Brook, NL
It is with profound sadness that the family of the late Amelia Elizabeth “Bette” Rolls announce her peaceful passing at the beautiful age of 94, surrounded by her loving family on Friday, November 22, 2024, at the Western Long Term Care Home.
She leaves to mourn with a lifetime of wonderful, happy memories her daughter, Wyn. She will be greatly missed by her siblings, Bill (Marie) Hutchings, Trudy (Werner) Schulz, and Colleen Boland, as well as her brother-in-law, Bill Smith and her sisters-in-law, Marg Hutchings and Pat Hutchings. Also leaving to mourn her many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews and cousins – all of whom she loved so very much.
She was predeceased by her loving husband, Harry in 1986; her beloved parents, Alex and Bride Hutchings; her brothers, Edward Hutchings and Kevin Hutchings; her sisters Barbara Smith, Sr. Josette Hutchings, and Joan Hutchings; her brothers-in-law, Bill Boland, Bill (Daphne) Rolls, and Gordon Rolls; her nephews, Michael Schulz, and Derek Rolls; her niece – Barbara (David) Wheeler.
Bette was born on August 31, 1930, in Dalhousie, New Brunswick, the second eldest of nine children. In 1932, her family returned to Newfoundland and settled in curling where Bette received her education. After graduating from high school, she completed a commercial course and began work as a stenographer with the Bowater Paper Mill. Wanderlust got the better of her and in 1956 she moved with a friend to Montreal to find work. After two years she returned to Corner Brook and resumed her position at Bowater’s, where she met her future husband, Harry (Tot) Rolls. They married in 1966 and in 1970, welcomed their first and only child, Wyn, to the family. She returned to work in 1978 with the RC School board as secretary, first at Presentation Elementary and then, All Hallows Elementary, from where she retired in 1995. Bette loved to travel and had many enjoyable trips with her sisters and her daughter. Whether it was a road trip to Deer Lake or a train trip to Ontario, she was always up for the adventure. She also loved the outdoors – camping trips with family or the annual “boil up” were some of her favourite times.
Bettes family would like to thank Dr. Bolous for the care he provided to Bette throughout the years. We would also like to acknowledge and thank the nurses and PCA’s on 4B of the Western Memorial Regional Hospital as well as the nurses and staff of Shoreview, Western Long-term Care, all of whom provided such wonderful compassion and care, not only to Bette but also to us, her family.
