Barbara (Hulan) Kittilsen of Truro, Nova Scotia
On July 10, 1940, Barbara was born in Jeffery’s, Newfoundland to the late Annie Maria (Shears) and Albert Hulan. In the early hours of January 2, 2025, Barbara passed away peacefully at Cedarstone Enhanced Care Facility in Truro, Nova Scotia.
Along with her parents, Barbara was predeceased by her sister, Ella Chaffey and her husbands, Roald Fredrick Kittilsen and Paul Smith. Barbara is survived by her children, Paul Kittilsen (Lori), Debert, Karen Kittilsen Levine (Robert), Truro, Michael Kittilsen (Tracy), North River, Jessie Kittilsen, (Massimo Perucchini) California, her two brothers, Winston Howard “Bud” Hulan (Shirley) St. John’s, NFLD and Surry Hulan (Phyillis) St. John’s, NFLD. Barbara was a proud grandmother to Matthew Grant, Benjamin, Sarah, Ian, Lucas and Emily Kittilsen.
Barbara spent her childhood in Jeffery’s, Newfoundland. She grew up in the Hulan’s family home, which was built in 1886 by her grandfather Lennard Hulan. Today the Hulan House stands as a registered heritage structure. After completing her schooling, Barbara became a kindergarten teacher. Her first teaching assignment was in Lark Harbour, Newfoundland. She later moved to Stephenville, Newfoundland where she continued her teaching career. Barbara had many fond memories of the time she spent teaching, and she often reflected on her experiences in the schoolhouse.
In 1965, Barbara and Roald married and moved to Dartmouth, Nova Scotia. Barbara and Roald settled in Brooklyn, Hants County where they raised their children. Barbara was an active member of the Brooklyn community, giving countless hours to the Anglican Church, Sunday School, and 4-H program. 4-H always held a special place in Barbara’s heart as she was a member, leader, 4-H parent and grandparent. Barbara had a love for food; she always had something on the stove or in the oven. She looked forward to hosting friends and family and she always took great pride in the preparation and presentation of a hearty meal. When not in the kitchen, you could find Barbara in the living room, working on her latest sewing or knitting project.
In 1990, Barbara moved to Meadowville, Pictou County to support Roald’s dream of owning a dairy farm. At this time, she decided to return to school to attain her CCA designation. As a CCA, Barbara worked at the Maritime Oddfellows Home in Pictou. Barbara loved her work as a CCA and always spoke fondly of her time at the Maritime Oddfellows Home.
Following Roald’s passing, Barbara sold the farm and moved to Truro, Nova Scotia. It was during this time that she reconnected with her childhood friend Paul Smith. Paul and Barbara’s relationship reignited quickly, and they were married in December 2008. At this point, Barbara fulfilled some of her travel dreams.
Although she moved away as a young woman, Newfoundland always held a very special place in Barbara’s heart, and she would seize any opportunity to visit “the rock”.
In 2018, with the onset of Alzheimer’s disease, Barbara moved from her home in Truro to Parkland Estates and later to Cedarstone Enhanced Care facility. The family would like to thank the Cedarstone staff for all the care and compassion that they provided to Barbara.
