Obituary of James Augustus Marshall
It is with profound sadness that we announce the sudden passing of James (Jim) Augustus Marshall at his residence in West St. Modeste on Friday, February 21, 2025, age 81 years.
Predeceased by his parents Alfred and Gertrude (Fowler) Marshall of Lanse au Diable siblings, Minnie, Margaret, Violet, Stewart, Leo, Henry, Victor, John & Fred.
Leaving to mourn his loving wife of 58 years Marie. Daughter Zita (Killian), sons Leroy (Roxanne), and Shawn (Barbara). Grandchildren Ian (Jess Ivany), Eric (Keisha Collins), Clare and Abby. Precious great grandchildren Declan and Lily. His sister Rosalie, brother Gordon and sister-in laws Olive & Lil, a large circle of Nieces & Nephews, extended family and friends and of course his special fur buddy, Charlie.
Jim was born into a large family in L'Anse au Diable, where he lived until he and Marie settled in West St. Modeste. After fishing with his brother Harry and brother-in-law John, the sea was eventually overshadowed by the lure of the open road. His career in the civil construction industry took him as far north as Saglek in Labrador. Jim often shared stories of his travels and experiences working on some of Newfoundland and Labrador's most significant construction projects, including the Hibernia Construction project at Bull Arm, the Trans-Labrador Highway, the Lower Churchill Project, Voisey Bay Project and lastly the Muskrat Fall’s Transmission Line where he eventually retired at the age of 74. It was after this that Marie insisted it was time for him to retire. When people talk about Jim, they always mention his strong work ethic and unending energy to get the job done.
Jim, a soul known for his zest for life, would often release his accordion's embrace, inviting melodies to dance through family gatherings and community celebrations. "Saltwater Joys" and "The Northern Lights of Labrador" topped the list of heartfelt requests, drawing smiles and tapping feet.
With brothers John and Fred by his side, they crafted moments of joy and laughter. Jim's love for music, family, friends, community, and the rugged beauty of Labrador wove a tapestry of cherished memories.
Though his presence will be sorely missed, the echoes of his spirit, humor, and boundless love will linger with us forever. This is a farewell for now... but never goodbye.
To Joy & Delbert Pike, we are incredibly grateful for your kindness and support during a time of great need. Your presence and comfort were invaluable to us as we awaited the paramedics. Words cannot adequately express the depth of our gratitude for your selflessness and compassion.
We would also like to extend our thanks to Darren Buckle and Jeinean Barney for your tireless efforts, and to the local RCMP for your professionalism. Each of you played an essential role during this challenging time for our family, and we deeply appreciate it.
With heartfelt thanks,
