Obituary of Ira Fequet
Ira Fequet was born on March 1, 1934, in Old Fort Bay, Quebec to Samuel Fequet and Mary Alice Maurice. Ira passed away on April 5, 2025, at the age of 91, in Lourdes de Blanc Sablon, Quebec surrounded by family and friends.
Ira was born into a family that relied upon fishing and hunting to make a living. From an early age, Ira learned how to thrive in the wilderness and harsh environment of the Lower North Shore. The rugged coastline helped develop his strength and resilience of character, as well as his kind and gentle spirit, and it nurtured his lifelong respect and love of nature, which is where he felt most at peace and happiest. As a young man, Ira began his career working for the Iron Ore Company of Canda (IOC) building the Sept-Îles railroad and was part of the team that laid the first set of railroad tracks. Ira subsequently went on to become a very skilled carpenter who took on roles in carpentry, masonry, and construction. However, the work he enjoyed most was serving as a guide in the recreational hunting and fishing industry, where he found true fulfillment and a connection back to his youth.
On July 26, 1957, Ira married Lauretta Elizabeth (Rita) Green, and together they raised six children in a loving and nurturing home. Ira and Rita worked tirelessly to create a household filled with love, laughter, and hope—a place that welcomed countless friends, family, and strangers over the years. Ira was a well-read individual with a deep curiosity about the world around him. His reading ranged from countless Louis L’Amour westerns to social and scientific articles in endless issues of National Geographic, Downhomer, and Reader’s Digest to name a few. Largely self-educated, Ira developed a broad and diverse knowledge base that reflected his love of learning, life and people.
Family meant the world to Ira, who is survived by his children, Bryce (Denise), Priscilla (Douglas), Robert (Bobby) (Greta), Roderick (Wayne), Sarah (Eldon), and grandchildren, Heidi, Jessica (Denis), Garett (Joanne), Heather (Chris), Alexander, Christopher (Theresa), Celina (Niko), Olivia, Jesse, and great-grandchildren, Kayla (Jonathan), Hunter, Charlie, Rebecca, Willow, India, Logan and Victoria. Ira also had a special place in his heart for his nieces, nephews, friends and extended family.
Ira is predeceased by his wife, Rita, his son, Marlon, his grandson, James Marlon, as well as his parents and siblings.
Cremation has taken place, and a Celebration of Life Service will be held at St. Peter’s Church in Old Fort Bay on Saturday, April 12th, at 2 p.m. The internment of Ira’s ashes will take place in the summer of 2025 when all family members are able to be present.
At the request of the family, the Celebration of Life Service will be followed by a gathering in the basement of the church, which is open to all who wish to attend.
