Leona Mildred Hunt

(nee Wells)

Corner Brook, NL

April 14, 1943 - June 9, 2025

It is with heavy hearts that the family of Leona Hunt announce her peaceful passing on Monday, June 9, 2025, at St. Patrick’s Mercy Home, St. John’s, at the age of 82.

To know Leona was to know strength. She didn’t sugarcoat things. She said what she meant. She worked most of her life, raised kids and grandkids, and still found time to bake a cake, bait a line, or sneak in her favourite game shows. She was grit and grace rolled into one woman — with a cup of tea in her hand and a dog at her feet.

Leona was a lifelong animal lover and SPCA volunteer. Her home was filled with life: her cherished dog Star, her birds Romeo and Juliet, and the wild birds she fed every morning. She found peace outside, happiest by the ocean with a fishing rod in her hand, the breeze on her face, and not a soul to bother her.

But above all, Leona lived for her family.

She leaves behind her two daughters, Lisa Wells (Mount Pearl) and Anastasia Hunter (Daniel) (British Columbia); her treasured grandchildren: Jalisa Ocean Hunt (Keefer), Philip Tucker, Joey Tucker (Rosalie), and Leigh Evans (Matt); and her sweet great-grandson, Odin Tucker, who brought her immeasurable joy in the short time they shared.

Also mourning her loss are her sister Loretta Wells (Florida), her special niece Marcheta Hussey, and a large circle of extended family and friends who will always remember her as tough, loyal, and full of heart.

She is predeceased by her husband Charles Hunt; parents Edmund and Annie Wells; stepmother Lucy Regular; sister Delilah Hollett; and brothers Arthur, Anthony, Charles, and Louis.

Leona worked nearly her entire life, always on her feet, always doing something. She had no patience for foolishness but endless time for the people and causes that mattered. She lived with fire, loved with devotion, and left behind a legacy of grit and heart.

Honouring her wishes, cremation has taken place. A private burial will be held later this summer, surrounded by her family, near the water she loved most.

The family extends sincere gratitude to the staff of St. Patrick’s Mercy Home for their compassionate care.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Leona’s memory may be made to the NL West SPCA, in honour of her lifelong love for animals.

Strong to the end. Wild at heart. Forever fishing under the stars.
