It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Walter James Spurrell Vincent at the age of 86 on June 19, 2025.
Left to mourn with wonderful memories are his family: His wife of 66 years, Helen, children Debbie (Craig) Major, Cathy (Jim) Rex, Blair (Ana) Vincent, Allison (Stephen) Green. Grandchildren: Michael (Lisa) Major, Jennifer Major (David Duong), Stephanie (Joseph) Carroll, Tyler (Sarah) Rex, Aaron (Jessica) Rex, Nathan (Kennedy) Vincent, Mariah Green, Adam Green. Great Grandchildren: Anna, Jack, Issac, Sophie, Sam, Eleanor and Sage. Sisters Trixie Oakley, Dorothy (Gary) Chaulk, brothers Paul (Jenny) Vincent, Wilson Vincent (Jean), sister-in-law Linda Vincent and sister-in-law Phyllis Allen, much-loved nieces and nephews as well as a large number of friends and neighbors including special neighbors the McHugh family and his helper Roxy.
Walter was predeceased by his daughter-in-law, Debbie Vincent, brother Cecil Vincent, brother-in-law Wilburn Oakley, sister-in-law Betty Vincent, brother-in-law Aubrey Allen, brother and sister-in-law Gerald and Betty Allen, and his good buddy Dave McHugh.
Known to many as Wally, he was born to Gertrude and Harry Vincent November 12, 1939 in Badgers Quay and was the oldest of six children. He met and married his wife Helen in 1959 and they resided in Curling and raised their four children and proudly still live in the same residence.
He began his career with Irving Oil, and continued with the Western Integrated School Board and Academy Canada. He participated on countless Boards and Committees that focused on improving the quality of education and social supports for the people of this province. Some include the Public Utilities Board, the Social Services Appeal Board, School Tax Authority, and the School Insurance Committee as well as serving as the Treasurer of Memorial United Church.
As an avid golfer, Walter enjoyed many days with friends on the course at the Blomidon Golf and Country Club - and was lucky (skilled) enough to sink a hole-in-one in 1988. Through the sport he made many lifelong friends and no doubt refined his skills of patience, precision and timing. Known for his dedication to his many roles - husband, father, pop, grandpa, co-worker, mentor and friend - he was soft spoken, big hearted, and found time for any person who needed a listening ear and a voice of reason.
Heartfelt thanks are extended to the staff of the 5th floor of the WMRH and the staff of the palliative care unit who allowed him to move forward with such support and grace and all the medical professionals who have cared for him over the years. Special thanks to Corinne Wiseman (Speech Pathologist) for her dedication to Walter over the years and the Parkinson’s Exercise Group that he attended to ensure his continued health. We will always be grateful.
