Obituary of Emmeline Doreen Janes
Emmeline “Doreen” Janes
It is with great sadness that the family of Doreen Janes (nee Hiscock) announce her peaceful passing at the Corner Brook Palliative Care unit surrounded by loved ones on July 12th, just shy of 96 years young. Born July 28, 1929, Doreen lived life in full colour, had an itch for adventure, and shared her light and laughter with everyone she met.
Doreen leaves a large circle of family and friends with fond memories – her cherished and devoted daughter Sherry Hynes (Paul), four grandchildren she adored - Shawn Penney (Barbara), Sarah Penney-Belbin (Chad), Matthew Hynes (Kirsten) and Mackenzie Northcote (Aidan), beloved great-grandchildren Brooklyn, Nicholas, Leo and Vivian, her brother Benjamin Hiscock (Elsie), her many nieces, nephews and cousins, as well as special friend, Madonna Elford. Doreen is predeceased by her husband, Raleigh, her daughters Lois Fisher and Donna Penney, her parents Norman and Violet Hiscock, her sisters Keziah (Kay) Locke and Francis Lee, and brother Leroy (Roy) Hiscock.
Doreen was born in the small fishing community of Champney’s West, Trinity Bay, and moved to Carbonear as a teenager where she met the love of her life, Ray. They relocated to Corner Brook in 1952 where they went on to raise their three daughters. Doreen built a career in Corner Brook, holding positions from Pharmacy Clerk to Accounts Payable Administrator before she retired from her position as Telecommunications Officer with the RCMP.
Doreen had an infectious zest for life and an enduring love for making others smile. No matter what, she found a way to inject laughter into every room she was in – whether that meant dressing in elaborate costumes, cracking quick jokes, or coming up with some witty one-liner only she was capable of. She seamlessly balanced this sense of humour with an enormously generous and kind spirit. She spent much of her life volunteering with the Huntington Society as Area Rep for the Western Region, and was famous for her open-door policy, offering a warm bed and a home cooked meal to anyone who needed it. Above all, she cared deeply for people and knew that laughter and compassion were truly the best remedy for anything.
The family would like to thank the staff at Western Memorial Hospital and the Palliative Care unit for their compassionate care for Doreen during her stay there. Appreciation is extended to the Home Dementia Care Program team and to relatives and friends for their tremendous support over the past few years. We would also like to extend heartfelt gratitude to her Westmount Estates family who developed an unforgettable bond with Doreen and provided her not only with care, but also with friendship and lasting memories.
In keeping with Doreen’s wishes, cremation has taken place. Visitation will be held at Fillatre’s Funeral Home, 4 St. Mark’s Avenue on Monday, July 14th from 2 – 4:00 pm and 7 – 9:00 pm. Funeral service will be held at Corner Brook United Church, 19 Park Street on Tuesday, July 15th at 11:00 am with interment taking place at Mount Patricia Cemetery immediately following the service. As expressions of sympathy, flowers are graciously accepted or donations can be made to the Huntington Society of Canada or a charity of one’s choice.
