Passed away Saturday, August 16, 2025 at Western Long Term Care, Philip Robert (Bob) Smith at the age of 88. He was predeceased by his parents Blanche and Philip Smith, brother Ray, sisters Betty, Ada, Kay, Edna; stepchild Marina, wife Jean and second wife Maisie.
Left to mourn with fond and loving memories are sisters, Susie and Shirley, brother Phil; children: Cyril (Karen), Betty (Paul) Ron (Pam), Jeannie (Jack), Alicia; step children: Edward Cecilla, Ben, Lisa, and Rick; great friend Gerald and a large number of grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
Bob was born in Dildo, NL and at the young age of two moved with his family to St. John’s. At 17, he proudly entered the Royal Canadian Air Force as a Leading Aircraftman. Following his service, he worked with Templeton Jewelry Store before completing an electronics course with Canadian National Telecommunication (CNT), which led to a career as a telecommunications technician.
In 1966, Bob moved to Hawkes Bay. Where he remained until 1986. He then accepted a position with Newtel in Stephenville, where he worked until his retirement in 1994. After the passing of his wife Maisie, Bob returned to Hawkes Bay – the place he always considered home.
Bob was a man of many talents. In retirement, he put his skills to good use repairing cars, televisions, motorcycles, and computers. He loved the outdoors, especially hunting and salmon fishing, and treasured time with friends and games of pool at the Torrent River Inn. Bob will be remembered for his zest for life, his kindness, and his patient, soft spoken nature.
The family extends a heartfelt thank you to the staff of Rufus Guinchard Health Centre, Lanes Retirement Home, and the palliative care nurses and doctors for their exceptional care and kindness.
In keeping with his wish’s cremation has taken place, burial will take place at a later date.
