Obituary of Mathilda Onalik

Please share a memory of Mathilda to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

After a life filled with love, laughter, and family, Matilda Sarah Kate Onalik (also known as Katie) passed away peacefully on August 17, 2025, at the nursing home in Mary’s Harbour, at the age of 65.

She was born on April 2, 1960, in North West River, to parents Joas and Susie Onalik. She grew up in Makkovik and later made her home in Corner Brook before moving to Nain, Nunatsiavut, where she was lovingly cared for by her daughter Lena and son-in-law Mike. Both cared for her for many years leading up to her passing. Their devotion and support brought her great comfort and peace.

Katie is survived by her former partner in life, Brian; and loving daughters Lena (Mike), Juliette (Nathan); and beloved grandsons Joseph, Micheal and Reid. Also cherishing her memory is her granddaughter-in-law Megan and her children Sebastian, Clyde, Dylan, Charlotte and Samuel.

She also leaves to mourn her only sister Wilhelmina; her nieces Susan (Edward), Renée, Lorraine; and great-niece Taylor-Jada, all of whom were very special to her. Katie will also be fondly remembered by her extended family and many dear friends.

The Onalik-Earle family wishes to extend their heartfelt gratitude to the many doctors, nurses at the Nain clinic, Nain home support workers, caregivers at the Harbour View Manor for her short stay, and community members who supported Katie during her illness. Your kindness, compassion, and encouragement lifted her spirits during difficult times and brought her great comfort. Knowing she was surrounded by such care and love meant the world to Katie and to all of us. The family also wishes to thank all community members, family, and friends who supported them with donations, kind words, and gestures of care during this difficult time. Your generosity and thoughtfulness have been deeply appreciated and brought comfort to the entire family.

A funeral service will be held on Tuesday, August 26, 2025, at the Makkovik Moravian Church, followed by a procession to the graveyard, where she will be laid to rest.
