1964 - 2025

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our much-loved brother Glenn Ivan Young on Tuesday, August 19th at the Sir Thomas Roddick Hospital, Stephenville at the age of 61 years. In 1983 our family returned from living in Schefferville Quebec for 18 years. It was an unexpected and not quite happy occasion at the time as IOC ceased operations and closed our community. It was tearful summer saying goodbye to lifelong friends Fast forward to today and we all say we have two families, our Schefferville Family and our Newfoundland family. We have received heartwarming messages from both. Glenn started his career in Community Studies, following graduation he was then the face of Big Brothers and Big Sisters for many years. He impacted many children of single parents in our area and advocated on their behalf. We have also received messages from many of his littles. After the organization folded Glenn went on to Dalhousie University to pursue a degree in Social Work. Everyone who knew Glenn knew he was a tireless worker who spent many overtime hours working to improve the lives of his clients. He went above and beyond for many years until his retirement this past year working well into the night and on weekends. His response was always if I don’t put in the extra time then I can’t give them what they need. Too often our lives are cut short unexpectedly. Glenn passed away through the night on August 19th surrounded by his sisters and friend Leah. An aggressive cancer that went undetected leaving him no time to fight. They say God can be merciful and he was by rewarding Glenn with a painless and peaceful passing. Glenn spent his last two days trying to reach out to family, friends and even cherished clients. His friend Sean Hillier was present to record his final wishes, and as a family we will ensure they will be carried out. A gentleman to his very core, Glenn will be greatly missed by his family and friends and the community of clients he once advocated for. His heart was big and full, with a smile for everyone he met. Glenn leaves to mourn his favourite brother Faron Young, (Joyce Young, Megan Young, Allison, Michael and Kohen Refugia,) sister's: Barbara Young and Karen McGraw ( Bertrand, Shawn & Melysa and their children Sofia and Vivienne, David & Annik and their children Tristan, Vince Ivan and Mila Joy,) Beverly’s family, (Denis Racine & Diane, Michael & Cathy and son James, Simon and Gabrielle and children Zoe and Jacob,)sister Lisa Lucas (Brian, Dakota & Jeremy, Ella and Hudson), His long time friends Sean Hillier and Leah Whittle. Glenn is predeceased by his father Ivan Young, mother Alice Young, sister Beverly Young and nephew Ty Lucas and numerous family members. Visitation will take place on Wednesday, Aug 27 from 2 -4 and 7-9 p.m. and on Thursday, August 28 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at Fillatre’s Funeral Home, Stephenville Crossing. Funeral Mass will take place on Friday, August 29 at 2 p.m from the St.Joseph's Roman Catholic Church, St. George's with Father Maurice O'Quinn officiating. Interment will follow at the church cemetery, Shallop Cove. Refreshments will follow internment at the Parish Hall in St.Georges’s. As expressions of sympathy flowers are graciously accepted or donations may be made to Bay St. George Sick Children’s Foundation. A very Special thank you to his long-time friend Sean Hillier who navigated us through a very difficult final goodbye to our dear brother. The family would like to thank the nursing staff of Sir Thomas Roddick Hospital and Dr. Dwyer, Ernie Fillatre and Roxanne MacIsaac of Fillatre's Funeral Home for their kind service and compassion.
