It is with great sadness that the family of the late Maurice Downey announce his passing on Monday, September 8th at the Health Sciences Centre, St. John’s at the age of 81.

He leaves to mourn with fond and loving memories: loving wife of 55 years Cynthia; daughter Claudia (Rhyder); grandson Calvin; beloved niece Leslie; brothers: Dan, Basil (Joan), Tommy (Dulcie), Johnny (Tina), Brian (Marie); sister, Marty (Tori); friend Sammy Barter along with many other nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.

Maurice very much loved all animals, his care and concern for them will be missed by the community animals including the crows.

He was predeceased by parents: Jim and Dora; brothers: Raymond, Patrick and Kevin; sisters: Marie, Claudia, Francie and Ann; brothers-in-law: Reginald, John and Ray; sister-in-law, Kay and friend Joe Radulak.

Visitation will be held on Wednesday, September 17th, 2-4 & 7-9 p.m. at Fillatre’s Funeral Home, 37 West Street, Stephenville Crossing. A private family burial will follow at the Roman Catholic Cemetery, Brook Street, Stephenville Crossing. As expressions of sympathy in lieu of flowers, donations may be made to SCAPA or to a charity of one’s choice.

The family wishes to express our deepest gratitude for the overwhelming love and support we have received during this challenging time. The family would also like to extend their sincere gratitude to Dr. Kristy Thompkins and all the doctors, nurses and staff of 4 North A. Your kindness, care and compassion were truly appreciated.

The family guestbook may be signed at www.fillatre.ca.

The family of the late Maurice Downey would like to express our thanks and appreciation to everyone for the phone calls, messages, cards, donations and visits to the funeral home.

Friday, September 5th ,2025 was the best day ever according to Maurice. He asked for Pepsi and enjoyed drinking it. He was so happy that his grandson Calvin and family were there, his niece Leslie, family and friends who visited and calls from his sister and brothers.

Thank you to Dr. Thompkins for all your care since 2018 when this road started. To nurse Brenda who was with us during that evening and night and to the staff of North A for the amazing care Maurice received during his time in the hospital.

A sincere thank you to Ernie Fillatre (whom Maurice told me to call, as he would take care of everything) and his staff at Fillatre’s Funeral Home, Stephenville Crossing and to Barrett’s Funeral Home, St. John’s for their guidance and compassion.
