Obituary of Eric Joseph Michael Fitzgerald
Eric Joseph Michael Fitzgerald
May 6, 1933 – October 9, 2025
With heavy hearts, we announce the peaceful passing of Eric Fitzgerald of Corner Brook on October 9, 2025, at the Western Memorial Regional Hospital Palliative Care Unit. Born on May 6, 1933, Eric’s remarkable life and spirited humour left a lasting impact on all who knew him.
Beloved husband to Joyce for over 64 years, Eric built a legacy anchored in love, laughter, and unwavering commitment to family. He is lovingly remembered by his children and their families, along with a wide circle of extended family and friends. Eric’s memory will be cherished by all whose lives he touched.
Eric was a proud Korean War Veteran, whose courage and sense of duty guided him throughout his life. He had the honour of serving as a past president of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 13 and the Westmount Club. His service and dedication were recognized with the Queen’s Jubilee Award—a reflection of his outstanding contributions to his community and country.
Eric gave more than 40 years of dedicated service at the Mill and, after retirement, continued to build his community through work in construction—helping guide the development of local roads, hotels, and even the Marble Mountain Chalet. Earlier in life, Eric shared his knowledge as a vocational school instructor, swim teacher, and diver.
Among his favourite places was the family cabin at Georges Lake, where Eric enjoyed countless hours surrounded by family and friends. Whether raising a glass, sharing laughter over a lively game of darts or cards, or simply soaking up the beauty of the lake, Eric truly cherished these moments. He also loved hunting trips with his good buddies, always in search of the biggest moose and even better stories.
Above all, Eric will be remembered for his infectious sense of humour. His laughter filled every room he entered, and even in challenging times, his wit brought light and comfort to those around him. To know Eric was to know joy, resilience, and kindness.
The family extends heartfelt thanks to the nurses and doctors at Western Memorial Regional Hospital and the Palliative Care Unit for their exceptional care, with special appreciation to Dr. Fola at the Broadway Family Clinic. Sincere thanks as well to Royal Canadian Legion Branch 13 for their ongoing support, and to Fillatre’s Funeral Home for their dedicated service.
Visitation will take place at Fillatre’s Funeral Home, 4 St. Marks Avenue, Corner Brook, NL, on Friday, October 10, from 2–4 pm and 7–9 pm. A celebration of Eric’s life will be held in Fillatre’s Chapel on Saturday, October 11, at 2 pm, followed by a reception at 4 pm at the Royal Canadian Legion, 7 West Street, Corner Brook, NL.
In lieu of flowers, the family welcomes donations in Eric’s memory to the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 13, the Palliative Care Unit of Western Memorial Regional Hospital, or a charity of one’s choice.
Eric’s legacy of love and laughter will live on. He will be deeply missed and forever remembered.
