Obituary of Samuel Porter Durnford

Samuel Porter Durnford, age 81, of Burgeo, Newfoundland, passed away peacefully on October 23, 2025, at the Calder Health Centre. He was born in Francois, Newfoundland, on June 20, 1944 and later moved to Burgeo with his family. Sam lived a full and meaningful life surrounded by the love of his family and friends.
He will be lovingly remembered by his children, Mike (Darlene), Barney (Kimberly), and Jamie (Deidre); his grandchildren and great-grandchildren; his sisters and brothers, Laura, Max (Catherine), Mae (Mike), and Harvey (Joan); and his sister-in-law, Leah.
Sam was predeceased by his parents, Harvey and Alma Durnford; his beloved wife, Vera; sons, Frank and Deon; brother, Art Durnford; brother-in-law, Art Parsons; and his partner, Audrey Dollimount.
Sam had a love for salmon fishing and partridge hunting. He was often seen out for his daily walks, where he always had a few words and a smile for everyone he met. He will be remembered for his kindness, sense of humor, and the warmth he shared with all who knew him. He was hardworking and helped those around him, never one to shy away from a task or someone that needed help. He made sure everyone around him was cared for. Sam was also very involved in the community at St. John the Evangelist Church in Burgeo.
The family would also like to give a huge thanks to the wonderful nurses and doctors who cared for him at the Calder Health Centre.
The funeral service will take place at St. John the Evangelist Church in Burgeo, Newfoundland, on October 28, 2025, at 2:00 p.m, officiated by Rev Brenda Strickland. Interment will follow at the Burgeo Community Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. John the Evangelist Church in Sam’s memory.
