Jean Aitken Mercer
June 9, 1937 – January 1, 2026
It is with great sadness that the family of Jean Aitken Mercer announce her sudden passing on January 1, 2026 at the Western Memorial Regional Hospital Palliative Care Unit at the age of 88.
Jean was born in Corner Brook on June 9th, 1937. Jean was always proud of her Corner Brook heritage being a descendant of the Christopher Fisher families. Her family home was located at 12 West Street where City Pharmacy now stands. She had many fond memories of growing up on West Street where she made many friendships and attended school at the Corner Brook Public School where she met her husband of 68 years Carl Mercer. Jean went on to start her own business known as Busy Bee Hobby Supplies which was one of the original businesses located in the then newly built Corner Brook Plaza. Jean and Carl loved to travel, especially in their motorhome where they travelled many times on the mainland and into the US, as well as so many holidays at home here in Newfoundland.
She leaves to mourn with fond and loving memories; Son Stephen Mercer (Barbara-Ann), Grandchildren: Stephen Bishop, Shelley Bishop (Brandon), Great – Grandchildren: Bailey Patey, James Patey, and Raven Bishop, Sister-in-Law Sylvia Smith, Nephew Rick Smith (Marie) and family. Nieces Lori Newhook and family, Sandy Dunphy and family and Nephew Jason Dunphy and family, Nephew Richard Mercer and family, Cousins John, Janet, Lionel Mayo and family.
As well as her lifelong family friends Ruth Klevorick, Clyde King, Munden Ivany and Joan Bartlett.
She is also survived by a wide circle of family, friends and relatives.
Jean is predeceased by her husband Carl Mercer, Mother Grace (Fisher) Burton and Father Walter Burton, Mother and Father-in-Law Classie (Lawrence) Mercer and Richard Mercer, Sister Mary Dunphy, Brother-in-Law Alex Dunphy, Niece Jeannine Dunphy, Brother John Burton, Brother-in-Law Melvin Smith, and Brother-in-Law Richard Mercer.
The family would like to extend a sincere thank you to the staff at the Western Memorial Regional Hospital Palliative Care Unit.
Cremation has already taken place. As per the families’ wishes there will be no visitation or services at this time. A celebration of life to occur at a later date.
