Obituary of Mary G Turpin
Mary G. Turpin
September 30, 1937 – January 6, 2026
It is with broken hearts that we announce the peaceful passing of our dear mother, Nana and sister, Mary Turpin (nee Molloy), aged 88, at the Corner Brook Long Term Care Centre on January 6, 2026, surrounded by her loving family. Mourning her loss are her children: David and his wife Ann Marie; Jed and his wife Brenda Janes; Luanne and her partner Louise; Carmel; and, Norma and her husband Murdock Brake, all of Corner Brook; her cherished grandsons: Dr. MacKenzie Turpin of Halifax; and Norman Brake and his fiancée Mikaela Roberts of Ottawa; her sisters: Patricia Bennett of Benoit’s Cove and Shirley Grant of St. John’s; and her sister-in-law Meta Turpin of St. Lawrence. Mary was predeceased by her beloved husband Victor J. Turpin (October 11, 2022); her parents David and Annie Molloy; her sister, Carmel Molloy; and, her brother-in-law Ronald Grant. Originally from St. Lawrence, Mary worked as a “telephone girl” prior to marrying Vic. As the story was so often told, Vic asked her whether she could bake bread as his way of proposing. And bake bread she did as the kitchen counter was lined with glorious pans of bread on many days. Mary dedicated her life to caring for her family with her wonderful cooking and baking skills. Of course the house was always spotless and you did not dare walk across the floor in your bare feet. Mary followed Vic to various parts of the country for his work before settling down in Corner Brook in 1980. Mary and Vic found a wonderful circle of friends here and their regular card games were certainly a highlight of their lives. Throughout the ensuing years, Mary continued to love and support her children and was always there when she was needed. In her latter years our mom was stricken with dementia and as heartbreaking as that was for her family, we felt blessed that we were able to visit with her. Those rare occasions when she spoke our name will be cherished forever. We now take some solace that the fog of dementia is gone from her and she is reunited with the love of her life, Vic. We express our sincere appreciation to Dr. Robert Young for his many years of care and to the caregivers at Corner Brook Long Term Care, particularly Pamela Wight and Tracey Parsons.
Funeral arrangements are in the care of Fillatre’s Funeral Home. Visitation will be held on Thursday, January 8 from the hours of 6-9 pm at Fillatre’s Funeral Home, 4 St. Mark’s Avenue with a funeral mass at All Hallows Roman Catholic Church on Friday, January 9 at 10:30 am, with Father Edward Terry officiating. Interment to follow at Mount Patricia Cemetery. As expressions of sympathy, donations may be made to the Corner Brook Long Tem Care Auxiliary.
As we mourn our dear mother we reflect on the words of one of her favourite songs - A mother’s love is a blessing. No matter where you roam. Keep her while she’s living. You’ll miss her when she’s gone.
