Obituary of Marie Hutchings

Please share a memory of Marie to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

It is with great sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of Marie Hutchings, on January 11th, 2026, surrounded by family, on the Palliative Care unit of Western Long Term Care, Corner Brook. Marie was born on January 13th, 1947 in Curling, NL to the late Thomas George and Mary (née Joyce).

Marie will be lovingly remembered by her devoted husband, William; her children, James (Stephanie) Hartley, Lisa and Kimberly; and her cherished grandchildren, Deirdre and Meghan Hartley. She will be greatly missed by her brothers and sisters Joyce, Francis (Brenda), Patrick (Gloria), Helen (Jerome) Meaney, and Tom (Ruth); brother-in-law, Mike Ryan; sisters-in-law, Jill George, Donna George, Trudy (Werner) Schulz, and Colleen Boland. She will be fondly remembered by the Hartley family: Leo, Joseph, Edward, and Isabelle. Marie was proud to have a close relationship with her many cousins, who were her best friends throughout life, including Ann Biava (née Quigley), who was a part of many memorable adventures over the years. She also leaves to mourn, many nieces and nephews.

Marie was predeceased by her parents, Mary (née Joyce) and Thomas George, her sister, Ann Ryan, her brothers, Thomas, Edward, Joseph, sister in-law Barbara George, mother-in-law Bride Hutchings, father-in-law Alex Hutchings, sisters-in-law Bette Rolls, Sister Josette Hutchings, Joan Hutchings, Barbara Smith, and brothers-in-law Edward Hutchings and Kevin Hutchings. Marie was predeceased by her first husband Thomas Hartley and his siblings James, Helen, Gerald, Richard and parents-in-law James and Edna.

Marie's greatest love was her family. She cherished watching her grandchildren Deirdre, and Meghan grow and blossom into beautiful young women, taking immense pride in each of their accomplishments. Family time meant everything to Marie. She cherished gathering around the table with family for a meal she lovingly prepared. She also had a deep love for her garden, and spent long summer hours tending to her flowers, patiently weeding and caring for each one. Marie was a hardworker who valued her faith and lived it quietly, but loyally each day. She loved to sing!

Known for her wit, kindness, and love of music, Marie brought warmth and laughter to those around her. She also shared a special bond with her beloved cat, Jack, who was never far from her side.

The family would like to extend special thanks to her homecare worker and puzzle partner, Laurie, and many more who touched her life over the past few years. They also extend heartfelt thanks to the many nurses at WMRH, and especially the Palliative Care nurses and doctors who lovingly cared for her with compassion and dignity during her final days. Also, Dr. Amy Pieroway, who's empathy and kindness were limitless. She was always there for Marie, and cared for her graciously throughout her health struggles.

Cremation has already taken place. A one-day visitation will take place at Fillatre's Funeral Home, St. Mark's Avenue on Wednesday, January 14th, from 2-4 and 7-9p.m. A service will take place at Fillatre's Chapel, Father Lainey officiating, on Thursday, January 15th, at 1:00p.m. For family and friends who wish to join with us, a reception to follow the service will be held in the reception area.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks to please consider doing an act of kindness for someone to honor Marie's generous spirit. Her memory will live on in the hearts of all who knew her.
