Obituary of Myles Patrick Griffin
Myles Patrick Griffin
August 27, 1950 – January 18, 2026
It is with deep sadness that the family of Myles Patrick Griffin announce his passing on January 18, 2026. He was 75 years old.
Myles lived in Deer Lake and was originally from Curling (Corner Brook), where many of his early passions were formed. In his younger years, he was well known for arm wrestling at the Corner Brook Winter Carnival, proudly alongside his father and brother.
Myles was happiest in his garage late at night, when the world was quiet. He loved working on vehicles and had a natural gift for building, fixing, and figuring things out. Never one for early mornings, once up, coffee in hand, he was always ready to tell a good story, often with a few creative liberties. He loved his coffee, oldies music, movies, and simple comforts like ice cream and Newfie fries.
Myles spent 30 years teaching in Corner Brook, where he made a lasting impact on countless students, especially those who needed someone steady in their corner. After retiring, he continued teaching in Iqaluit and Arctic Bay, Nunavut, and later in Behchoko in the Northwest Territories, before returning home to Newfoundland.
Above all, Myles was a devoted husband and loving father. He was deeply proud of his wife, Phyllis, cherished his daughters, Jill and Cheryl, and was a proud grandfather to Andrew Snow, Erika Snow, Lisa Snow, Megan Boulay, and Ellie Bonia.
Myles is predeceased by his parents, Patrick and Miriam Griffin; his parents-in-law, Winston and Julia Wiseman; and his brother, Peter Griffin.
He is survived by his wife, Phyllis Griffin; his daughters, Jill Griffin (Simrat Singh) and Cheryl Griffin (Dean Bonia); his sisters Theresa Griffin (Peter Straubel) and Patti Griffin (Randy Heppell); his sister-in-law Darlene Cramm; his brothers- and sisters-in-law Juanita Elms (Art), Christina Carroll (Gerry), Winston Wiseman (Lorraine), Jane Wiseman, Rhonda Boyle (Brian), Roddy Wiseman (Camilla), Craig Wiseman (Beulah), Terry Wiseman (Sharon Kelloway), Max Wiseman, Anthony Wiseman (Carla Hurley), and Glynn Wiseman (Torena); his grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
Special thanks go out to staff at the Western Health Palliative Care, Chemotherapy, and Interventional Radiology Units in Corner Brook, and the Health Sciences in St. John's.
Visitation will take place on Saturday, January 24, 2026, from 12:30 to 2:00 p.m. at Fillatre Funeral Home in Deer Lake, NL. The service will follow at 2:00 p.m., with burial at the Interdenominational Cemetery in Deer Lake. In lieu of flowers, please feel free to make a donation to the charity of your choice, in Myles’ memory.
He will be deeply missed by his wife, ‘his girls’, and all who were lucky enough to sit with him, listen to his stories, and feel genuinely cared for. If you’re looking for him now, he’s in his garage, oldies playing, coffee nearby, working late into the night, in his happy place.
The funeral service will be live streamed. Please register to view by clicking on the link below.
