Obituary of Raymond Patrick Hynes
RAYMOND PATRICK HYNES
MAY 30, 1939 – JANUARY 23, 2026
It is with great sadness and heavy hearts that the family of the late Raymond Patrick Hynes announce his passing at the Palliative Care Unit, Western Memorial Regional Hospital on Friday, January 23, 2026 at the age of 86 years. He leaves to mourn his devoted wife and best friend of 60 years Marion; Sons: Darren (Betty Lou); Craig (Cyndi); Neil (Terra) and Randy (Lori); 8 Grand-children: Nathan Hynes (Kristen); Cassandra Wheeler (Adrian); Genna Hancock (Aaron); Cody Hynes (Liz); Noah Hynes; Ryley Hynes; Sydnee Hynes and Madison Hynes; Great-grandchildren: Ashton Hynes; Tanner Hancock; Kenzie Hynes; Casey Hancock and Charlotte Wheeler; sister: Mary Companion; Brother-in laws: Les McCarthy (Theresa); Bernard McCarthy (Mary-Ann); Paul McCarthy (Richard) and Billy McCarthy (Michelle); Sister-in-laws: Nora McCarthy; Vicky McCarthy (Stuart); Liz Knowles; special niece and life long friend Brenda White; as well as a large circle of nieces, nephews, cousins and many friends.
Predeceased by his mother and father: Leo and Sarah (Humber) Hynes; brothers: Peter (Hilda); Albert (Mary); Joseph (Margaret); sisters: Dorothy (William); Rose Short (Clayton); brother-in-law: Leo Companion; father/mother-in-law: Michael and Annie McCarthy; brother-in-law: Anthony McCarthy (Margaret); family friend: Edward King.
Raymond was born on Woods Island and began his fishing career at Fox Island (Port Au Port) at the age of 14. In his mid 20’s he moved his fishing career to the Highlands fishing there for over 50 years. He dearly loved the Highlands and spoke often of his great friends there. He also worked as a journeyman welder for Wesnova Enterprises Ltd, a family business that he was so proud of. During this time he spoke highly of friends and acquaintances he encountered throughout Western Newfoundland while providing services to the petroleum distribution industry. He enjoyed his cabin on Woods Island after retirement spending time with special friends and growing his garden.
Cremation has taken place. Friends and family can visit on Monday, January 26, 2026 at 1:00 – 2:30 pm followed by a service at 3:00 pm in the chapel at Fillatre’s Funeral Home, St. Mark’s Avenue officiated by Father Rev. Lainey. Interment will be held at a later date.
Special thanks to Dr. Lafferty, Dr. Penney and the Palliative Care Unit who showed such care and compassion; to Lawrence McCarthy for his ongoing care; Sobey’s pharmacy team and Fillatre’s Funeral Home for their kindness and professionalism.
