Of

St.George's, NL

1961- 2026

It is with profound sadness that the family of the late Hayward Bennett announce his sudden passing on Thursday, January 29th at St. George’s at age 64 years. He leaves to mourn his beloved wife, Celina; children: Alexander (Melanie),Amber Jane; sisters and brothers: Violet (Mike) Dawson, Diane Sansford (Jerry), Blanche (Dave) Cutler, Melene (Stan) Foote, Trudy (Brian) Blanchard, Glenda (Tony )Ploughman, Gary (Daphne) Bennett, Tia Hicks ( Wade), Annemarie Bennett (Andy),Ben (Nancy) Bennett, Len(Grace) Bennett, and Grant Bennett; sisters – in -law: Sharon (Stan), Doreen ( Daryl); brothers -in- law : Terry (Hilda), John (Carrie), Andy ( Judy), Renny (Karen) and Lorry. Hayward Bernard Bennett was born on October 27th, 1961, St. Georges, NL. He was indeed a very special birth as he was the first boy to arrive on the scene after five girls. He was also born on his grandfather’s birthday, Hayward John Benoit, hence the name Hayward. He was a larger-than-life character who possessed a God given talent for entertaining. It may be the rich tone and passionate powerful voice that drew you in or his amazing story and joke telling skills that would rival the content and timing of any seasoned stand up comic. Also, could be those dark Elvis Presley eyes, but whatever it was, he had the power to hold his audience under his spell. Some of Hayward’s other skills included carpentry, mechanics, plumbing and electrical and for the most part was self-taught. Of course, his heart was so big that he was always there to share those skills, day or night. Whenever he was called upon, Hayward showed up, toolbox in hand, big smile on his face, ready to tackle any problem. Ten times out of ten he got the job “done” and the pay “none”. Hayward loved his family, his friends, and his community. He could have gone places, namely “ Nashville”, but he had such an attachment to his people and his home that he never desired to be anywhere else. He was predeceased by his parents: Harold and Laura Bennett, nee Grant. Visitation will begin on Thursday, February 5th 2-4 & 7-9 pm at St. Joseph’s Roman Catholic Church, St. George’s from where the funeral mass will take place on Friday, February 6th at 2pm with Father Edmund Dantes officiating. Interment will follow in the summer of 2026. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Bay St. George Sick Children’s Foundation. Arrangements have been entrusted to Fillatre’s Funeral Home, 37 West Street, Stephenville Crossing. The Bennett - O’Neill families would like to take this opportunity to express our gratitude for your tremendous love and support. Thank you for all the phone calls, texts, facetimes, cards, gifts, hugs and shared tears and laughter. Your thoughts, prayers, love and support will help us be strong as we navigate through this time of such great sorrow. Thank you.
