November 30, 1946 - February 12, 2026

With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Nick Whelan on February 12, 2026. He was a beloved brother, uncle, cousin, and friend whose presence filled every room. Nick passed peacefully at Carbonear General Hospital at the age of 79. Born on November 30, 1946, he was the youngest of seven children, affectionately known throughout his life as “the young fella.” The name stuck, not only because he was the baby of the family, but because there was something forever endearing about him, a quiet gentleness paired with a sharp mind and a subtle spark.

He was predeceased by his loving parents, Nicholas and Mary; his sisters Sr. Maureen (Presentation Order) and Bride (Tom) Connolly; his brothers Bill (Laboura) and Mike (Bev);  his brother-in-law John Bromley, his beloved fur pal and travel companion, his cat, Ginger, and his good buddies Vince Byrne and Frank Flynn.  He now joins them in rest.

Nick leaves behind a legacy of love in his brother Jim (Cheryl) and sister Susie, who will miss him dearly. He will forever be remembered by his many nieces and nephews, Debbie, Maureen, Ethel, Nora, Steve, Kenneth, Colin, Bonita, Randy, Jose, Claude, Michelle, Velma, Willis, Mary, Jason, Michael, Nicole, Brent, Alan, and their families, who will never forget their cherished uncle and the quiet, steady love he carried for each of them.  He also leaves behind his cousins Regis, Sean, and Gerry, whom he loved to connect with and share stories, along with dear friends Tom Wiseman,  Ambrose Byrne, who valued his steady presence and conversation, Ron Byrne, Maurice Power, Gordon Lewis, special neighbours Cyril and Mary Foley and a large circle of extended family and friends.

In 1969, Nick left his beloved Conche and made his way to Toronto to work at National Hardchrome alongside about ten other men from home, proudly known as “the Conche crew.”  He lived with his brother Jim during those years, and on weekends they could often be found visiting Country & Western bars, enjoying the music that reminded them of Newfoundland. Hank Snow was his favourite;  songs that spoke of hard work, longing, and the pull of home. His work later brought him to Calgary, Alberta and to Nova Scotia, before he eventually retired back to Conche, the place that had always remained close to his heart. In later years, Nick faced Parkinson’s disease, a challenge that tested him in ways few could fully understand.  Yet even as the disease progressed, he maintained the quiet resilience that defined him. He liked to keep up on current events, always aware of what was happening in the world, ready with an opinion delivered in his own understated way. His dry humour never left him. With just a few well-timed words and that familiar look in his eye, he could make you laugh when you least expected it. It was his gift; subtle, clever, and entirely his own.

Nick’s life was marked not by noise, but by loyalty, strength, and connection. He valued family deeply. He carried his roots proudly. And though Parkinson’s may have slowed his body, it never diminished his mind, his wit, or the love he had for those around him. He will be deeply missed, lovingly remembered, and forever held in the hearts of all who knew him.
