Obituary of Cortland Best

The family of the late Cortland “Shont” Best Jr. share with heavy hearts the news of his passing on February 27, 2026, at the Labrador Health Centre, surrounded by his loving family. He was 77 years old.

Born on March 3, 1948, in the community of Mud Lake, Shont lived a life deeply rooted in family, with a profound love of the land and music, gifts he shared with others. He was well known for his wonderful sense of humour — right up until his final hours and even in difficult moments, he found ways to bring smiles to the people he loved.

Leaving to mourn with cherished and loving memories are his devoted wife: Gloria Best; his children: Triffy, Todd (Denise), Teena (Barry), and Denise (Dorman); and his beloved grandchildren: Miranda, Madonna (Charlie), Arlene (Mitch), Kyle, DJ (Dayna), Shane (Tara), Draper (Renata), Dillon (Jessica), and Nick (Pupun). He was also a proud great-grandfather to 21 great-grandchildren and 3 great-great-grandchildren, each of whom brought him tremendous joy.

He will be lovingly remembered by his brother: Randy (Melissa); sisters: Carol, Drue (Watson), Claudine (Pat), and Sharon (Perry); as well as a large circle of nieces, nephews, extended family, and many dear friends.

Shont was predeceased by his parents, Cortland and Agnes Best; his brothers Raymond and Kenneth (Hooker); his sister Marjorie; his grandchildren Candice and Anthony; his nephew Pat; and his niece Kim.

The family wishes to express their heartfelt gratitude to the medical staff of the Labrador Health Centre for their compassionate care, especially Kara, Kyle, Elaine, and Angel, whose kindness and support brought comfort in his final hours. Special thanks are also extended to Dwayne Rumbolt (Tracey), and to neighbours Jason and Scott, for their steady support during this difficult time.

A funeral service will be held at a later date, to be announced.
