WALSH, Alma M.

Sept 30, 1933 – Feb 25, 2026

Alma Meretta Walsh (nee Gosse) passed peacefully surrounded by family at Shiretown Nursing Home in Pictou, NS, on Wednesday, February 25th, 2026, at the age of 92 years.

Born in New Harbour, NL, to parents Stephen and Flora Gosse, she grew up happily at her father’s sawmill at White Heart and then in Dildo, Trinity Bay.  She was a devoted and caring daughter, who dearly loved her nine younger siblings and wholeheartedly embraced her role as their big sister.

As young adults she and her sister Margaret moved to Corner Brook where she met and married Walter.  They were blessed with two children, Garry and Corinne.  Alma and Walt were a great team.  They worked together on everything – from daily chores, to raising the children, to DIY renovating and landscaping to transform their tiny property into a family home – always side by side.

Sadly, after only 21 years of happy marriage, Walt passed unexpectedly. Having lost the love of her life, Alma never remarried.  Graciously declining her father’s offer to move back home, she continued on her own – focusing on her family, her work, and her community.  Years later the birth of her beloved granddaughter, Heather, opened a new door of love and she cherished every moment with her.  Alma adored her family.

Alma believed that if you are going to do something, it should be done to the best of your ability.  She took great pride in her work at Canada Employment.  Always meticulous, concise, and on time.  However, she thought if the work was being done correctly, there was no reason why you couldn’t have fun too.  She formed treasured friendships there which continued after her retirement.

She was a person of faith and fellowship.  As a lifelong member of the ACW, she gladly spent hours volunteering, creating and making items for fundraisers, and helping out as needed.  She believed in simple acts of kindness – running errands for others, providing rides to get groceries, holding a hand, listening.

Alma had a large circle of friends and very much enjoyed time with them.  Whether at home, work, church or social gatherings, she loved to make others happy.  She loved getting together with the girls, hosting teas and bridge parties, playing darts, shopping with friends, sharing her delicious meals and scrumptious baked goods, and ‘being there.’  She had a sharp mind and was extremely creative.  She loved to design, sew, knit, craft, arrange – to make things beautiful for her family and friends.  And she did.

Quite simply, she loved life.  She loved those in her life and they loved her.  Always will.

In addition to her beloved husband and parents, Alma was predeceased by brothers, George and Calvin; sisters, Edna, Margaret Pollett (Ray, deceased), and Ruby Ballard; brothers-in-law, Peter and Donald Walsh; sisters-in-law, Marge White and Barbara Martin.

She is lovingly remembered by her son, Garry (Gwen); her daughter, Corinne (Malcolm); granddaughter, Heather Smith (Robert); step-grandchildren and great-grandchildren; brother, James (Dulcie, deceased); sisters, Joyce Simmons (Nelson), Mary Colbourne (Paul), Doreen Higdon (James), Linda Hefford (James), Annette Bonin (Paul, deceased); brother-in-law, John Walsh (Bonnie); sister-in-law, Ethel Vass (Zultan, deceased); nieces and nephews; and many friends.

The family extends sincerest thanks to all the staff at Glen Haven Manor in New Glasgow and, more recently, Shiretown Nursing Home in Pictou for their kind, caring and loving support of Alma.

At Alma’s request, there will be no funeral at this time.

A graveside service will be held at Mount Patricia Cemetery, Corner Brook, at a later date.  Cremation has taken place under the direction of McLaren Funeral Services.

For those wishing to honour Alma’s memory, please give to the Alzheimer Society or the Heart and Stroke Foundation, or do a good deed for others.
