John Gerard Murphy

April 23, 1946 – March 4, 2026

Corner Brook, NL

It is with great sadness that the family of the late John G. Murphy announce his passing on Wednesday, March 4, 2026 at the Western Long Term Care, Palliative Care Unit at the age of 79 years. He leaves to mourn with fond and loving memories his wife of 55 years Margaret; children: Brad (Michelle) Murphy, Terri-Lynn (Peter) Antle and Jennifer (Jay) Johnson; grandchildren: Ryan, Brett and Gavin Murphy, Sam and Max Antle, Jaelyn and Julia Johnson; sisters: Patricia, Mary (Bill), Sheila (Brian), Trudy (Gillis) and Theresa; brother and sisters-in-law: Calvin, Sandy (Geraldine) and Flora (Eldrick); as well as a large circle of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Predeceased by his parents John and Gertrude, brother Jim, parents-in-law Ralph and Rachel, sister-in-law Ivy, brothers-in-law Dave and John.

John was a man of curiosity through conversation, and he always encouraged his children and grandchildren to experience the world. In his well lived retirement, he fueled his curiosity with a schedule of family trips to New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Florida, Caribbean and European cruises, train rides through the Rocky Mountains and his last vacation to Alaska. No doubt there were many conversations with total strangers at every stop. In the words of Mark Knofler… ‘here comes Johnny gonna tell you a story…and he do the walk the walk of life’! But nothing ever matched his favorite trips to Portugal with Margaret. It was here that he enjoyed their walks on the beach, the history, the food and their simple days together. How lucky can one man get.

As per his wishes, cremation has taken place, a Celebration of Life will be held at a later date. As expressions of sympathy, donations may be made to the Diabetic Association.
