Greta Burnetta Newhook
April 7, 1942 – March 19, 2026
It is with heavy hearts that the family of Greta Burnetta Newhook announce her peaceful passing on March 19, 2026, at the Western Memorial Regional Hospital Palliative Care Unit at the age of 83.
She leaves to mourn with fond and loving memories her son Stephen Newhook (Patricia); daughters Elizabeth Marisi (Don) and Krista King; and her cherished granddaughters Kailyn King, Amelia King, Shaye Marisi, and Danica Marisi. She is also remembered with love by her brother Readdy Payne; sister Sharon House; and a wide circle of nieces, nephews, extended family, and dear friends.
Greta was predeceased by her parents Stanford and Louise Payne; her beloved husband Albert Newhook; sister Shirley Patey; brother Bruce Payne; infant sister Grace Payne and brothers-in-law Wallace Patey and Warren House.
Born in Parsons Pond, Newfoundland and Labrador, Greta moved to Corner Brook at the age of 16 to begin working. While employed at Brookfield Ice Cream, she met the love of her life, Albert. They married and made their home in Corner Brook, where they built a beautiful life together and raised their family. Greta devoted herself to her children and warmly opened her home to many extended family members over the years.
Greta had a deep and abiding love for Newfoundland, always preferring the comfort and familiarity of home. In her younger years, she spent countless sun-filled summer days at Margaret Bowater Park, creating joyful memories with her children. She had a spirited and adventurous nature, finding happiness in camping, friendly games of bowling and darts, and lively rounds of cards. Greta had a natural gift for connection—she genuinely loved meeting new people and embracing new experiences.
In her early forties, she bravely took up skiing at Marble Mountain, a pursuit that brought her great joy and excitement for many years. Greta cherished the peaceful, meaningful moments spent at the family cabin in Little Bonne Bay Pond. In later years, Greta moved to Mountain View House in Meadows, where she formed many new friendships and was affectionately known as the “Queen of Queens” within her card group.
Greta will be remembered for her kind, caring, and compassionate nature. Though soft-spoken and small in stature, her strength and courage were undeniable. The way she spoke to others revealed her tender heart - she so often called them “ my darling “.
The Newhook family extends heartfelt thanks to the staff of Mountain View House and the Western Memorial Regional Hospital Palliative Care Unit for their exceptional care and kindness.
In keeping with Greta’s wishes, cremation has taken place. There will be no formal visitation or service at this time. A celebration of Greta’s life will be held in August 2026.
Greta was the heart and soul of her family.
