Margaret Anne
1935 - 2026
It is with great sorrow that we announce the peaceful passing of Margaret Anne Evans on March 27, 2026, at the age of 90.
She leaves to mourn with fond and loving memories her children, David and Janice; her cherished grandchildren, Sean Evans (Natasha), Mandy Evans, Cheryl Clarke (Dale), and Christopher Clarke (Hayley); her great-grandchildren Kailem, Liam and Rowan; her brother, David Messervey; as well as a large circle of relatives and friends.
At the age of 11, Anne left her home in Sandy Point to live with her aunt, Mollie MacPherson, in Grand Falls, where she attended school and completed her Grade 11 Commercial. In 1953, she moved to Gallants and worked in the payroll office of the wood camps owned by Jim Collier. It was there that she met her future husband, George Evans. The couple later moved to Montreal, where they were married. After a few years away, they felt the pull of Newfoundland and returned home to build a life together in Barachois Brook. They remained in their home there, surrounded by family and friends, for the rest of their lives.
Anne seemed to possess a remarkable memory. In the weeks before her passing, she and her brother reminisced about their early years, and she was able to provide him with detailed names and dates for his genealogy records. It was equally remarkable that she could recall those who worked in the five camps, along with the names of the foremen and cooks.
Anne was a kind and gentle soul who deeply loved her family. She devoted herself to caring for her mother, who lived next door. Like her father, she was independent and never sought to influence others but was always ready to lend a helping hand. In her later years, her loving daughter Janice came to live with her, providing care, comfort, and companionship. She was predeceased by her beloved husband, George Evans; her parents, Morgan and Jean (Butler) Messervey; and her sister, Diana Messervey.
She will be deeply missed. Thank you to the nursing staff at the Sir Thomas Roddick Hospital and her care giver Josephine Tucker.
According to her wishes, cremation will take place and a service will be held at a later date. As expressions of sympathy donations may be made to a charity of one’s choice. Arrangements have been entrusted to Fillatre’s Funeral Home, 37 West Street, Stephenville Crossing. The family guestbook may be signed at www.fillatre.ca.
