Theresa Pauline Carey
1939 - 2026
It is with great sadness that the family of Theresa Carey announce her passing on Tuesday, March 31, 2026 at the Western Health Centre in Corner Brook at the age of 86 surrounded by her family. Leaving to mourn with fond and loving memories are her children John (Tania) and Regina and brother Patrick as well as a large circle of in-laws, nieces, nephews, and friends. She was predeceased by her loving husband, Jack, parents Vincent and Ann Elizabeth Mitchell and sisters Philomena, Regina, Susanna, and Ita, as well as brothers Thomas and Hughie.
Theresa spent her working life as a long serving, devoted teacher in the Roman Catholic school system in Corner Brook. Her care and concern for the children in her care was noted by all who knew her as a professional colleague and those who knew her as “Mrs. Carey”. The aspect of her life that meant the most to her was her family – her beloved Husband Jack and the children they doted on, John and Regina. Outside of her family, Theresa’s proudest legacy are the many children she taught through the years mainly at All Hallows, Presentation, and St Gerard’s schools. She delighted in meeting former students who would often approach her with open arms and a “Mrs Carey!” She also served for many years as a proud and devoted associate of the Presentation Sisters.
She was always up to sing a song and loved getting together “for a time”. She loved a rowdy game of cards with many laughs although she known to be “a bad loser, but far worse winner”. When she got together with her sisters, their laughter and carrying on was utterly unrestrained and at times embarrassing to those who were associated with them – but did they ever have a lot of fun together.
The family would like to thank the wonderful doctors, nurses, and staff at Western Health Centre in Corner Brook for the compassionate, loving care she received from them over her final illness. Many heartfelt thanks also to the clergy and laity of All Hallows Parish for the blessing of their prayers and support both during her illness and final rites.
