Obituary of Russell Henry Phillip Reid

Please share a memory of Russell to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

It is with heavy hearts that the family of Russell Henry Phillip Reid announce his passing on May 2, 2026, at Western Memorial Regional Hospital, surrounded by his loving family.

Born on October 30, 1939, Russ lived a full and meaningful life rooted in love, hard work, and devotion to family. As a lifelong resident, he was proud to call Reidville home. This is where he raised his family and built a life filled with memories.

Russ was a kind soul who would do anything for anyone. He enjoyed a good chat, keeping up with everything happening around town, and always liked to see what was going on in Reidville—from Budgell’s Garage to the mailbox, and who might be moving in at the beginning of the road. He had a special love for transport trucks and spent 50+ years hauling wood for the pulp mill in Corner Brook.  He also cherished the outdoors and the simple pleasures of life including spending time at his cabin in Dancing Point.

Leaving to mourn with cherished memories is his loving wife of 66 years, Lillian Reid (née Cross). He will be forever remembered by his children: Darlene (Mike) Rutland, Quinton (Nancy), Nichole (Mervin) House, Sheldon (Rosalind), and Carmen (Jeff) Stagg.

Also left with treasured memories are his grandchildren: Shannon Young, Phillip (Monica) Reid, Jordan (Kim) Reid, Meghan (Trent) Lake, Quincy (Cassie) Reid, Russell (Vanessa) Reid, Devon House (Megan), Cody Reid (Megan), Sara House, Laura Reid (Dawson), Reed Stagg, and Aria Stagg, along with 13 great-grandchildren.

He is also survived by his brothers: Eugene (Florence), Winston (Anne), and Willie (Hazel); sister-in-law Jane (Bob) Wilton; brother-in-law Melvin (Wavey) Cross; sister-in-law Shirley Cross; as well as a large circle of nieces, nephews, extended family, and friends.

Also leaving to mourn is lifelong and cherished friend Betty Layden and her family, Sandra (Jim) Williams, Sheila (Rick) Rumbolt, and David (Patricia) Layden. Betty was far more than a friend—she was family. She shared countless vacations, holidays, laughter, and everyday moments with the family, and was a constant source of love, friendship, and support throughout the years. Dad always treasured his phone calls with David when he was away. Their presence touched every part of our lives, and the memories shared will be remembered always.

Russell was predeceased by his parents, Douglas and Alice (née Watts) Reid; parents-in-law Henry and Bride (née Nichols) Cross; great-granddaughter Lola Young; brother Willis (Joan) Reid; sisters-in-law Margaret (Doyle) Janes, Gert (Oliver) Janes, Grace (George) Bailey, Patricia Stewart, Julie (Winston) Wiseman, Brenda (Ronald) Pye, Diane Cross, Bessie Reid; and brother-in-law Don Cross.

The family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to the doctors and nurses of the Palliative Care and ICU Unit's at Western Memorial Regional Hospital for the compassionate care shown to Dad and the kindness extended to the entire family during this difficult time. A special thank you to Dad’s homecare workers for taking such good care of him.

He will forever be remembered for his kindness, steady presence, strong work ethic, and the love he gave so freely. His legacy lives on in the family he adored and the community he loved so deeply.
