Obituary of Hope Mary Wiseman

The family sadly announces the end of Mary Hope {Moakler} Wiseman's full and courageous life's journey on May 3, 2022, at Western Long Term Care, surrounded by her family and passionate caregivers.

Predeceased by her parents Katherine (Walsh) and Alfred Moakler; brothers John, Edward ,Alfred, Hubert, Robert and Francis; Samuel Wiseman ,father of her children; and aunt and uncle,Theresa and James Walsh.

Leaving to mourn with heavy hearts her children Janet (Henry Windeler), Paul (Brenda), Barbara and Patricia with whom she previously resided; grandchildren Kathryn-Courtney (Catlen), Daniel, and Khristie (Jason) ; great-grandchildren Khloe and Jameson , and her miracle great grandson Joseph , whose pictures and videos provided her joy and comfort these last few months, as well as, nieces and nephews.

Sincere thanks to the staff of Stillwaters House, Western Long Term Care and her support system the last numbers of years, Marie Lundrigan, Dr. Chris and Katie Healey, Kim and Rich Morris and Dr. David Coleman and his staff. 

Hope was born in St. John's, where she attended Mercy School and played the violin in the Symphony Orchestra. She was a graduate of St. Clare’s Nursing School with further studies at McGill University, Montreal. She moved to Corner Brook upon marriage.

Hope's nursing career spanned many avenues; ward nurse, intensive care and emergency nurse, nursing assistant instructor, nursing supervisor, finally retiring as the Director of Diabetes Education.

Volunteering was a huge part of who Hope was, from collecting for various

charitable organizations, to working political campaigns, to executive positions on the Western Memorial Hospital Auxiliary, to the WMRH Foundation with her highlights being the Radiothon and the Tree of Memories.

Hope enjoyed a special bond with the Special Olympics, from coaching, to volunteering, to serving on the executive, to knitting scarves for the Canada Games 2016, hosted in Corner Brook, but the pinnacle would have been cheering her daughter Patricia’s gold medal performance at the Canada Games 2008 in Quebec City.

Hope shared a special bond with her grandson Daniel, as both were selected as torchbearers for the Vancouver 2010 Olympics. 

Creativity was a gift Hope passed onto her daughters, often gifting family members knitted clothes, quilts or tole painted pieces. Many family and friends' children wore a specially knitted christening gown on their special day made with love by Hope. Mom displayed her pride in her family, being the one to iron and press our clothes for all special events, christenings, graduations and weddings.

Hope lived an active life gardening, curling, golfing, cross country skiing, and doing the daily crossword. This continued into retirement with line dancing, Scottish dancing and learning to play bridge.

Hope was awarded the Queen's Diamond Jubilee Medal in 2012.  She was very proud to accept on behalf of the people she had the privilege to encounter in the many organizations she worked with.

Donations would be greatly appreciated to Stillwaters House Recreation Program through the WMRH Foundation Guardian Angel Program.

Funeral service will take place on Friday, May 6, 2022 at 10:00 am at The Cathedral of the Most Holy Redeemer, Mt. Bernard Avenue with Father Ed Terry officiating, interment to follow at Mt. Patricia Cemetery.  Visitation will be held at Fillatre’s Funeral Home, St. Mark's Avenue, Thursday, May 5^th 2-4 pm and 7-9 pm. In keeping with her wish’s cremation has taken place.
