Obituary of Alice Marie Banfield

Please share a memory of Alice to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

Alice Marie Banfield

Burgeo, NL

Passed peacefully away at LTC, Corner Brook, Alice Marie Banfield. Predeceased by parents Hollett and Ivy Hutchings and the love of her life, her husband Rodney James Banfield. Left with broken hearts and many memories are her children: Karen (Mike), Jeff (Bridget) and Glenn (Lois) and the pride of her life, her precious grandchildren: Douglas (Kristian), Jamie, Leah and Andrea and her step grandchildren Megan and Michaela. Also broken hearted and grieving is her sister Daphne (Bernard) Sweeney and her life long best friend Ethel.

Alice lived a very full and active life. Although raised on Exploits Island, she spent her whole adult life in Burgeo where she met and married her husband Rod. Together they raised their children and spent more than 50 full and happy years together.

Alice moved to Burgeo in 1962 as a teacher and after having her children she returned to the workplace where she worked in and ran Burgeo Pharmacy for 26 years.

Alice loved to dance. She loved music and entertaining. She loved to be around people. Everyone was welcome at her house or cabin. She was everyone’s friend and she was witty and smart. She was full of one liners that were part advice, part Alice-isms. She also loved darts, cards, knitting, word searches, a good cup of tea and most of all berry picking. Her retirement years were spent at one of their cabins where things like cutting wood and all things outdoors would fill her time.

Alice’s house usually smelled like baking bread, jams, jellies and a regular assortment of cookies. Many of her goodies would be given away and as Alice would regularly say “ You never want for what you give away”.

Alice’s last three years of life were spent in LTC and the majority of that time was spent in the Raspberry Road unit of LTC, Corner Brook where she gained another family, the staff, who treated Alice as their own mom or nan. The incredible staff made sure that Alice had the highest quality of life as possible and despite dementia stealing parts of her she was still Alice right to the end.

As per Alice’s wishes, cremation has taken place. She will be placed with her love Rod on Saturday where we know she will be at peace.

Visitation will take place at St John Evangelist Church Burgeo on Friday, May 27, 2-4 pm and 7-9 pm. Funeral will take place Saturday at 2 pm with internment at the Burgeo cemetery after the church service.

In lieu of flowers donations made be made to the Alzheimer’s Society or Crohn and Colitis NL or a charity of one’s choice.

As a tribute to Alice, please honour her by visiting someone who is in LTC, hospital or shut in. Your presence is the best present.
