JOHN P. KELLY CORNER BROOK, NL Dad was born on Burnt Island, Bonavista Bay, on December 29, 1926, to Michael and Elizabeth Kelly, along with five siblings: Michael, Thomas, Elizabeth, Nellie and Jean. There’s a good old fashion Irish party going on in Heaven now! Cheers Dad! He peacefully passed away at Western Memorial Regional Hospital on the morning of October 29, 2009. Dad fished the waters off Labrador through his teenage years and came to Corner Brook in the late 1940’s and worked for the construction company that built the cement plant and was subsequently hired by North Star Cement Co. where he worked for 39 years until his retirement in 1991. He served as President of their union for two terms in which he negotiated “the best contract ever” according to his buddy Cal Windsor, who served as Union Secretary at the time. He leaves to mourn his seven children: Sharon Penney (Bruce), Corner Brook, Michael Kelly (Kay), Deer Lake, Grace Sheppard (Lowie), McIvers, Nicholas Kelly, Edmonton, AB, Josephine Colbourne (George), Corner Brook, Patricia Park (Brian), McIvers and Cyril Kelly (Jeannette), Brampton, ON; 13 grandchildren, two step-grandchildren; sisters-in-law: Hazel Kelly, Corner Brook and Margaret Rogers, Ontario; as well as many nieces and nephews whom he loved dearly, his many friends and former coworkers. Besides his parents and siblings, he was predeceased by his wife Annie Louise Kelly (nee Lavers) in 1980, her parents Alban and Jenny (nee Frampton) of Port Saunders, and Mom’s siblings, Aggie, Billy, Joe, Nicholas and Josephine. Visitation will take place from Fillatre’s Funeral Home, 4 St. Marks Avenue on Sunday, 2-4 and 7-9 P.M. The funeral Mass will be held on Monday, November 2nd at 10:30 A.M. from the Cathedral of the Most Holy Redeemer, Mt. Bernard Avenue, officiated by Father Gordon Grace. Cremation to follow with a private burial at a later date. As expressions of sympathy, in lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Kidney Foundation or to the Western Memorial Regional Hospital Foundation.
