Obituary of Mary (Kathryn) Furlong

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Kathryn Furlong of Corner Brook, NL on July 15^th, 2022. Kathryn was with her family in Gander who cared for her during the last few weeks of her life. Kathryn was the only child of the late James and Noanie (Costello) Furlong. Born in Curling East on December 21^st, 1936, Kathryn lived there until 1980 when the family moved to Corner Brook.

Kathryn spent the majority of her working life at Corner Brook City Hall. She started with the City in October 1961 as a clerk typist and worked there until March 1995. She worked the last fourteen (14) years as the City Clerk. Kathryn was dedicated to her church and community, an avid downhill skier and painter and she loved a good game of bridge. Kathryn’s many interests included knitting, cross-stitching, embroidery and playing games on her tablet. She also loved to travel.

Kathryn will be sadly missed by her cousins Maxine Dunn of Gander; Richard Furlong (Clare) of New Market, ON; Dorothy Furlong of Waterloo, ON; Furlong cousins in Montreal and British Columbia; and Tom Ogle (Annette) of New Jersey, USA; the children and grandchildren of Maxine who will miss their Aunt Kathryn; as well as a large circle of friends.

The family would like to thank Dr. Peter Callahan of Corner Brook for his care and concern, the staff of the 3^rd floor of the Western Memorial Regional Hospital, the staff of the Provincial Cancer Care Program in both Corner Brook and Gander. A special thank you to Nurse Tracey King of Gander, who provided support for Kathryn and her family.

Thank you to Kathryn’s neighbors, Gary and Shirley Penney, and her friends that supported her during her illness - Patricia Dormody, Carol Jardine, Betty Hackett, and Julie Briffett. Your kindness is greatly appreciated.

Finally, thank you to Stacey’s Funeral Home in Gander and Fillatre’s Funeral Home in Corner Brook.

In lieu of flowers, a donation in Kathryn’s memory may be made to the Dr. Bliss Murphy Cancer Centre, Western Regional Hospital Foundation or to a charity of one’s choice.

Cremation has taken place. Visitation will be held on Monday, August 1^st at Fillatre’s Funeral Home on St. Mark’s Avenue from 7:00 – 9:00 pm. A Funeral Mass will be held on Friday, August 5th at 2:00 pm at the Cathedral of the Most Holy Redeemer in Corner Brook. Burial to follow at Mount Patricia Cemetery
