Obituary of Barbara Ruth Baker

Please share a memory of Barbara to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

Baker, Barbara Ruth (Perry) – age 75 of Deer Lake, passed away peacefully in hospital on October 12, 2022.  Born in Deer Lake, Newfoundland on December 13, 1946; she was a daughter of the late Gilbert and Audrey (West) Perry. Also predeceased by husband Stan Baker and sister Renee Sheppard.

Being the 2nd oldest of five children, Ruth often cared for her younger siblings and this experience led her to nursing school. After graduation in the late 1960s, she accepted a position as a Nursing Assistant at the Cpt. William Jackman Memorial Hospital in Labrador City. Little did she know that building would be the site where she met the man who would go on to be her husband and best friend, as well as the birthplace of her children. Ruth’s passion for helping others extended well beyond the hospital walls, as she often volunteered her time and resources to various charitable organizations and other worthy causes. After more than 40 years in the north, Ruth returned to Deer Lake and continued volunteering her assistance as well as caring for her husband, who was in poor health.

Leaving to mourn are her loving children Paul Baker, Lisa Baker (son-in-law Greg Clarke); granddaughter Morgan Baker and step-grandson Tyson Clarke; sisters Sandra Perry, Sharon Cox (Lou), brother Glenn Perry, brother-in-law Tom Sheppard, sisters-in-law Margaret Baker, Marie Baker and many nieces and nephews; special friends Bev Gibbons, Ruth Abbott and Olive Hammond.

In keeping with Ruth’s wishes, cremation has taken place. Visitation will take place at Fillatre's Funeral Home, 10 Clinic Drive, Deer Lake on Monday, October 17 from the hours of 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. A memorial service will be held at St. Paul’s United Church on Tuesday, October 18, 2022 at 2:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers and continuing her passion for helping those in need, donations in Ruth’s memory can be made to the Canadian Red Cross Hurricane Fiona in Canada Appeal. https://www.redcross.ca/how-we-help/current-emergency-responses/hurricane-fiona-2022
