Obituary of Benjamin Hoover Rowsell (CARD OF THANKS)

Please share a memory of Benjamin to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

For my Husband
Every woman hopes to find
The true love of her life
A handsome man to take her hand
And choose her as his wife.

I looked here and everywhere
To find someone like you
Then one day, you were there
And all my dreams came true

You’ve filled my life with joy
And set my heart aflow
You were cherished and adored
More than you could ever know

No truer love anywhere
On earth could have ever been
With all my heart
I thank you sweetheart, just for loving me

Love, Mary

Benjamin Hoover Rowsell

November 6, 1929 – October 28, 2022

Corner Brook, NL

On October 28, 2022, Dad passed away peacefully at home with his loving wife of 68 years and best friend, Mary, by his side.  Mom and Dad shared the kind of love few people are lucky enough to experience for a day, let alone a lifetime. Their devotion to each other right up to his last breath never wavered.

Left to mourn are his devoted children Judy (Bob), Derrick (Bette), Linda (Alvin), Keith and Cathy (Bob). Dad was a doting Poppy to his ten grandchildren: Penni, Ryan, Marc, Staci, Jennifer, Janis, Kenisha, Samantha, Hannah and Carter; as well as a loving great-grandfather to Kia, Kenzie, Ella, Max, Fynn and Frankie.

Born on November 6, 1929, Ben was the last family member of Arthur and Blanche Rowsell. He was predeceased by his parents and his siblings, Bax, Rev.Reg Rowsell, Bill, Joe, Art, Bert, Mary and Ruth. He served time in the Navy following in the footsteps of his brothers, Art, Joe and Bert (Airforce 166 Regiment. He then went to work at Bowaters and retired after 41 years.

A kind and gentle soul, beloved by his family and friends, Dad greeted everyone with a smile. He would give the shirt off his back for anyone in need. Dad was an active member of the Legion, involved with  sick and visiting, Ways and Means, and poppies, as well as sports chair.

Friends and neighbours remember Dad for this infectious laughter and enduring sense of humour. He always had a joke to tell and or a song to sing to lift someone’s spirits.

A pillar of the community, Dad’s list of contributions is lengthy. He was a Scout leader, Minor hockey coach, and served on the executive for Local 64. He was an avid softball player, curler, and bowler. He was a member of the First United Church Sr. Choir and a member of various committees.

A special thank you to Mil and Stu who never faltered in showing up to play cards every Tuesday night, Dr. Whitten and Wendy who always fit Dad in when needed.

Also mourning his loss are Mildred (Stu), Anne (Bob), Ellen (Stan), Veronica, Yvonne (Herman), Jacqui (Glen), Ethel, Will and George. Predeceased by Rose (Max), Eugene, Jane and Grace.

Friends may visit Filliatre’s Funeral Home, 4 St. Mark’s Avenue on Wednesday, November 2 from the hours of 2-4 & 7-9 PM. The funeral service will be held on Thursday, November 3 at 1:00 PM from First United Church with Rev. Jocelyn Cook officiating. Cremation will follow at private family interment at Mount Patricia Cemetery. As expressions of sympathy, donations may be made to First United Church Memorial Fund, Royal Canadian Legion or charity of one’s choice.
