Obituary of Clarence Harry James Squires
Clarence Squires
January 15, 1936 – December 26, 2022
It is with extremely broken hearts that we announce the passing of Clarence Harry James Squires – “Bud for short” – on Monday, Dec. 26, 2022, at Western Memorial Hospital, with his family by his side.
Born in Deer Lake on Jan. 15, 1936, Bud was the baby of his family.
His love of spending time in the woods, cutting and packing wood, started while he was working in the woods camps and driving the pallet trucks with Bowaters.
From there, he started working with Deer Lake Transport and Moffatt Brothers, where his love for Mack Trucks, easy afternoon drives to take in the sights, and stopping for a lunch – whether it was a Rocky Harbour Irving hotdog or a boil up at Mill Brook – began.
In 1958, Bud married the love of his life, Joy (Vanessa) Evans on a beautiful, mild winter day in January.
Family was his priority, which could easily be seen through the selflessness he showed in raising and caring for their five children.
Then, you could see his face light up each time a new baby was born into the family, and every time one of them walked through the door with a, “Hey, Pop!” or in later years, “Big Pop.” Every one of them was “worth nine golds.”
Bud was never without company as he repaired washers and dryers in his shed after he retired, as at least one of his many friends was always stopping by spinnin’ yarns.
Not often seen in a shirt and tie, Bud’s signature “suit” of choice was a flannel shirt, well-worn jeans and a pair of wool socks, hand-knit by his love.
He will be dearly missed by his loving wife of 65 years, Joy Squires (nee Evans); children Karen Howson (Calvin), Brenda Bridger (Douglas), Evan Squires (Judy), Rhonda Pearson (Fred), Stephanie Sceviour (Michael); grandchildren, Kimberly Howson (Chad Quinn), Ian Bridger (Dawn), Daniel Bridger, Zachary Squires (Sarena), Vanessa Squires, Heide and Erin Pearson, Emily Sceviour (Landon Churchill), Sophia Sceviour (Hayden Martin), Daniel Sceviour; great-grandchildren, Benjamin and Charlotte Bridger, Koston and Maverick Bridger, Bowie Squires; sister Eva Kapelanski (Quebec), special nephew and buddy Gordon Wellon (Ontario); nephews Derek and Errol Janes, Alan and Steven Kapelanski; niece Debra Kapelanski, and other extended family members and friends.
Pre-deceased by parents Harry and Fannie Squires, brother Walter Squires; sisters Hilda Janes, Myra Wellon, Beryl White; parents-in-law Clayton and Hazel Evans; siblings-in-law, Freddy Kapelanski, Patricia (Pat) Squires, William (Bill) Janes, Beaton Wellon, Glesby White; nephews Allan, Brian and Colin Janes.
A special thank you to the nursing staff at 3A Medicine at Western Memorial Regional Hospital, Dr. Krista Fudge, Dr. Jennifer Chaulk and Dr. Kate Lafferty.
In lieu of flowers, family and friends may donate to the Janeway Children’s Hospital or the Autism Society of Newfoundland and Labrador.
