It is with profound sadness and heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Mary Gertrude Companion Payne at the Health Science Centre in St. John’s on April 5, 2023. Mary passed peacefully away surrounded by her family after a 29 year battle with cancer.
Leaving to mourn her husband of 49 years Randy, her 2 children: Jonathan Payne and Jennifer Toole (Warren), five grandchildren: Landen Toole, Brady Toole, Lucas Payne, Grayson Payne, Nathan Payne, siblings: Marie Andrews, Dorothy (David) Brake, Fran Joyce, Tom (Marg) Companion, Leona (Gary) Wiseman, Leo Jr. Companion, Paul (Sharon) Companion, Bill (Judy) Companion, Ted (Debbie) Companion, brothers in-law: Baxter Howell, Bob Murphy,
Mary was predeceased by her grandson Preston Payne, parents: Leo and Annie Companion, parents-in-law: Russell and Loretta Dove Payne, siblings Betty Companion, Alice Howel, John Companion, Theresa Murphy, Brian Companion; brothers in-law: John Andrews and Greg Joyce.
Mary’s life was dedicated to her family, first and foremost. She was an amazing wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt and friend. She propped up her family and supported them through many passions and difficulties in their lives. She was the proudest Grandmother and her home was a testament to her love for her children and grandchildren, every wall was adorned by their photos and mementos.
Mary’s home was always open to anyone in need of compassion, an ear to listen, a warm meal or a place to lay their head. Mary was known to many as “Mom Payne” or “Nanny Mary”. She had so much love to give and anyone that was blessed enough to meet her had an ever-lasting effect on their heart.
As per Mary’s wishes, public visitations will be held on Saturday, April 8, from the hours of 2-4 and 6-9 pm at Barrett’s Funeral Home, 73 Commonwealth Avenue, Mount Pearl. The funeral servicewill be held on Monday, April 10, at 10:30 am from Our Lady Queen of Families (St. Peter’s Church), 110 Ashford Drive, Mount Pearl, with Father Wayne Dohey officiating.
