To Leo’s family:
I am so deeply saddened to hear of Mr. Fagan’s passing, as he was a major influence and role model for me as a teenager. I, too, am one of the many cadets he left an everlasting impression upon as a cadet in 184 RCSCC Curling Sea Cadets. He was a strong supporter of helping youth reach their full potential. He took great pride in the young adults and leaders we were becoming as we represented 184 Curling, Corner Brook and the sea cadet organization and made certain to share that with anyone who listened. As an impressionable 12-year-old in 1992, I felt seen and acknowledged by Leo as a kid with a lot to offer, long before I realized that myself.
One particular moment in time under Mr. Fagan’s encouragement and guidance stands out so very clearly from my early days in cadets, one which I feel shaped the course of my life. As a new entry, one night, he saw me looking disappointed and asked how I was doing, to which I told him I was going to quit because I couldn't join the band. To that he said “If you want to be in the band, you come to band practice Sunday.” Happily, I went to practice that following Sunday, which was the start of many opportunities I never imagined I would experience. Mr. Fagan’s kindness, support and encouragement was the catalyst for many great experiences for a teenager who was full of enthusiasm and potential, but limited on resources. Looking back, I wholeheartedly believe that his influence in those early days changed the trajectory of my life. For that, I have boundless gratitude. Thank you, Sir.
For each of you who hold Leo dear to their heart, please know that you are very close in my thoughts, and I hope that you are able to find strength and comfort in the challenging days ahead.
Fair winds and following seas, Sir.
