Q: What will you never forget about John?
A: I remember a time when Mitch was dating Aunt Mary. The ship he was sailing on was stuck in ice out from McIvers in the Bay of Islands for a few days. The two love birds couldn't stay apart for long, so they asked dad (Howard) if he would drive Aunt Mary and Janet across the bay so they could walk out on the ice and visit the boy friends on the ship. Dad obliged and off we went. As we walked out on the ice towards the ship I remember feeling a little nervous about being on the ice as there were cracks everywhere. So once there, Aunt Mary and Janet started yelling for their men. A voice replied back saying he would go get them. So the boys of course were tickled pink that their women where out standing on the ice. They threw the ladder over the side and scramled down onto the ice,, dad and I went for a walk. So once the huggie kissy was all over Mitch and his buddy returned to the ship. The ship had to keep the props going so it wouldn't freeze in so there was ice pans and open water everywhere. Well Mitch slipped and fell through the ice, his buddy grabbed him the girls screamed, we thought the worst. Mitch scrambled back on the ice and up the later soaking wet and his pride bent a little. It's a good thing he made it because if not they wouldn't have had 4 lovley children who are now lovely adults. We will all miss Mitch sincerely.
