Predeceased by: devoted wife of 69 years, Elsie (Stowe); daughter, Margaret Hewitt-Barney, son-in-law, Jonathan Barney; sister, Grace Butler (Lloyd); parents, Brigadiers Joseph and Amelia Hewitt, parents-in-law, Robert and Sarah Stowe; sister-in-law, Gertrude Noseworthy (Roy); brothers-in-law Robert Stowe, Randolph Stowe and Walwyn Pollett.

Leaving with fond memories: loving daughters, Carol (Art) Griffin, Glynis (Alan) MacGibbon, and Diane (Dwight) Howse; grandchildren, Liam Griffin (Ara Finlayson), Neala Griffin, Jill De Witte(Ryan), Beth Czerwinski (Kevin), Sarah Howse (Jason Forbes), Jonathan Howse (Jennifer), Neil Hewitt-Barney (Nancy); ten precious great-grandchildren, Milo and Sasha Griffin, Hollis and Beau De Witte, Owen Czerwinski, Alice and Audrey Forbes, Norah Howse, Finley and Emerson Hewitt; sisters-in-law, Evangeline Pollett and Gwen Stowe, and numerous nephews, nieces and their families.

As the son of Salvation Army officers, Clyde lived in several different communities around Newfoundland and Labrador including Grand Bank, Bell Island, Harbour Grace, St. John’s and Corner Brook. He developed a great love of all types of music but especially enjoyed Salvation Army Band music. He was a bandsman for over 50 years, playing a variety of brass instruments in that time, and also enjoyed his membership in the Men’s Fellowship Club , serving for a time on the executive.

During WWII, Clyde enlisted in the Royal Canadian Air Force, serving for 3 years as leading air craftsman, working on a Geodetic Survey of the Arctic in Canada. Upon leaving the air force he married Elsie Stowe in 1947 and they raised four daughters after settling in Corner Brook. He worked at Bowater’s for 37 years retiring as Programmer Analyst in the Data Processing Department. He probably thought he had left computers behind but in his 70s he got his first PC and had to relearn a totally different system. He continued using computers and in his eighties he left Windows behind and received his first MacBook. At 97, he was still I-messaging, reading news, watching his favourite movies and Facetiming with family much to the astonishment of many people!

Clyde enjoyed camping with family, travelling both on and off the island, spending time with friends and having extended visits with family, especially when grandchildren came along. He was a wonderful father, grandfather and great-grandfather. Well known for his wit and humour, he loved practical jokes and delighted in making others laugh. He was typically a quiet and gentle man, never wanting to be the center of attention but if encouraged, he could entertain with funny stories of his past.

He will be greatly missed by family and friends.

The family would like to offer their sincere appreciation to the staff of Bayshore Estates, where Clyde and Elsie resided for a few years as well as to the staff of Valleyside, Western Long Term Care Home who so lovingly and respectfully cared for Clyde during the past two years.

Visitation will be on May 8th, at 2 pm at Fillatre's Funeral Home on St. Mark’s Avenue in Corner Brook, followed by a Celebration of Life at 3 pm in the Chapel with Majors Brian and Valerie Wheeler officiating. Donations in memory of Clyde may be made to the Salvation Army Temple Band Fund or a charity of one’s choice.
