Obituary of Mabel Bungay

Mary Mabel Bungay (nee Cornect)

Lourdes, NL

February 22, 1934 - May 10, 2023

At 89, Mabel passed peacefully away at the Bay St. George Long-Term-Care Centre where she was a resident for the past five years.  Her family home was La Grand’Terre (Mainland), and she lived in Lourdes for most of her life.

To Mabel’s credit was her devotion to education which resulted in a 34-year teaching career, retiring as Principal of École Sainte-Anne in 1988. Close to her heart was the promotion and preservation of the Francophone language and culture. Mabel was well known for her commitment and service to family, community and church. 

She leaves to mourn with fond and loving memories brothers Canack, Clyde, and Leonard (Cynthia), along with many nieces and nephews as well as a large circle of extended family and friends.

Mabel was predeceased by her husband Richard (Dick) Bungay in 1964; her parents William Cornect (1989) and Johanna (Lainey) Cornect (2002); siblings:  Dalma (1997), Adolph (2003), John James (2006), Kevin (2008), Ronald (2011), Margaret (2016), and Vincent (2018).  

Special thanks to the staff at the BSG Home (Protective Ward). They often commented on her warm smile which was welcomed by those who lovingly cared for her during her time there.

Visitation Sunday, May 14, 2023 from 2:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m. & 7:00 – 9:00 P.M. at the La Chapelle Sainte-Anne (St. Anne's Chapel) in Mainland where the Church Service will take place on Monday, May 15, 2023 at 11:00 A.M. with Fr. Joseph officiating. Interment to follow at the Roman Catholic Cemetery in Mainland.
