April 9, 1938 – May 14, 2023

With great sadness, the family of the late Gerald Alphonsus Downey announce his peaceful passing on May 14, 2023, at the age of 85 years.

Gerald, also known as Gerrit or Pop to many, was a kind and loving soul; he took great pride in his family and loved them deeply. He was compassionate, generous, and willing to help anyone who needed it. Gerald spent many years farming, fishing, working in the woods, and construction. Regardless of the type of work, Gerald poured his heart into whatever he did. While known as a hard worker, he knew how to have fun. His pastimes included fishing, hunting, playing cards, and spending time with family and friends.

He was predeceased by his wife Geraldine Marie Downey (nee Quilty), parents Alexander and Margret Downey; sisters: Rita, Maude, Bride, Marie, Helena; brothers: Frank, Richard, Albert, Walter, and Vincent. 

Gerald had three beautiful grandchildren, he loved them dearly and was very proud of them.

Leaving to cherish his memory are his beloved children: Mary (David), Sheila (Dwayne), Jerome (Minnie), and Glen (Jackie); his grandchildren: Jessie, Shelby and Mitchell, his brother John Downey, his nieces and nephews, and dear friend Signa.

Our family wishes to sincerely thank the medical team at Sir Thomas Roddick Hospital for their support and compassion. Most notably, Dr. Dwyer, who went above and beyond to ensure his care and comfort.

Cremation has taken place. Visitation will be held on Wednesday, May 17^th at Saint Columcille Parish, St. Fintan’s from  7:00 PM – 9:00 PM. The funeral mass will be held by Father Patry at 1:30 PM on Thursday May 18^th at Saint Columcille Parish, St. Fintan’s. Interment will follow at Highlands Cemetery.
