Thank you to Father Terry and the Bereavement Team at the Most Holy Redeemer Parish for the beautiful and meaningful funeral liturgy. Thank you to all the voices that filled the Cathedral and brought celebration to a life well-lived.

We were honored by the presence of the many retired teachers and the honor guard that held us up as we walked with George one last time.

To Fillatre’s Funeral Home, thank you for your compassion and kindness during this challenging time.

It was impossible to sum up George’s life in his obituary, but our community came out, both in person and with their messages, to fill in the gaps. We loved hearing about your favorite memories, funny stories and the impact that George had on your life. We hope that it continues to bring a smile to your face when you think of George or share one of his stories.

To everyone, please accept our sincere thanks for being a pillar of strength for our family. Your support has shown us the beauty of human connection and the power of friendship. We will forever cherish the memories of George and the moments we shared.

Thank you from the bottom of our hearts.

George Frederick Buckle
April 22nd, 1951 – July 5th, 2023
Corner Brook, NL.

It is with broken hearts the family of George Frederick Buckle announce his passing on July 5th, 2023, at Western Memorial Regional Hospital in the arms of his loving and devoted family.  Born on April 22, 1951, in Corner Brook, NL, he was the eldest son of George and Isabel Buckle.

George grew up running the streets of Humber Heights blazing the trail for his many brothers and sisters. His youth was spent at Jubilee Field, the soccer pitch, the basketball court and trying his hand at any sport that he could. In the middle of a snowstorm, George married his best friend and the love of his life, Karen, who he fondly referred to as Dunph, on January 28th, 1972. That was the beginning of their beautiful love story that spans over 52 years. Over that time, they welcomed their 3 children and 7 grandchildren. On Tudor Street, they built a home with a strong foundation for their family of faith, love and tradition that has been passed on to their children and grandchildren.

George was a teacher by trade. His passion for playing sports eventually carried over into coaching, where he spent countless hours.  His players, including his kids, will all remember his dedication to building winning teams based on skill and team spirit. George made sure everyone on the court and the bench had a role to play. He will also be remembered for the small quiet moments when he would lift you up and lend a helping hand.  He had a special way of making everyone feel important and seen. George followed his grandchildren, wherever their passions took them in Canada and the US. He cheered their successes and picked them up after tough losses, which he never looked at as losses but as opportunities to learn.

George was happiest with his family around him.  Any gathering was an occasion to celebrate with family and friends. In his retirement, George felt grateful and blessed for the many years of travel with Karen, enjoying sunrises and sunsets together.  He had many friends and always wanted to make new ones wherever he went. George’s roots in Newfoundland ran deep and he could make a connection with anyone he crossed paths with, no matter where he was.  George's strength, grit and determination will never be forgotten. Neither will his sparkling and mischievous blue eyes that never faded.

George is survived by his wife Karen (Dunphy); children Jason (Brigitte), Jennifer (Peter) and Heather (David); grandchildren Jayde, Connor, Declan, Isaac, Aiden, Lilly, and Sarah; his mother, Isabel Buckle; siblings Catherine Bennett (Tom), David Buckle (Mary), Brian Buckle (Gaylene), Donna Mitchell (Hal), Dianne Oxford, Patrick Buckle, John Buckle (Marleen MacDonald), Michelle Humber (Ben), Marylou Buckle (Ruby Gosse), Darlene Buckle; sister-in-law Elizabeth Buckle; in-laws Bill Griffin, Anita King, Tim Dunphy (Michelle), David Dunphy (Muriel), and Sandy Caines (Gordie) as well as countless nieces and nephews.

George was predeceased by his father, George Buckle Sr.; siblings Christina and Michael; parents-in-law Jack and Marcheta Dunphy; sisters-in-law Jackie Griffin and Darlene Dunphy and brother-in-law Rod Oxford.

The family would like to thank the steady and compassionate care of the medical teams at Milton District Hospital and Western Memorial Regional Hospital.
