Obituary of Gordon Brake

Joseph (Gordon) Brake

December 31, 1945 – July 11, 2023

 It is with great sadness and heavy hearts that the family of Gordon Brake announce his passing at Western Memorial Regional Hospital in Corner Brook, NL on July 11, 2023 after a long and courageous battle with cancer at the age of 77 years.

 Gordon leaves to mourn his loving wife of 55 years Gloria Gwendolyn (Valerie); daughter, Sherry Cernius (Vince); sons, Chris and Cory (Tina Duffney); grandchildren (his sunshine and for who he has fought so hard to live for), Holly (Jesse Curtis), Aaron and Mylee; sisters, Phyllis Sheppard (Dave) and Vera; brother & sisters-in-law, Winston Sooley (Eunice Ryan), Serina Blanchard, Bryant Blanchard, Wilfred Blanchard (Frances), Lillian Caines, Alvin Blanchard (Juanita), Meta Hiscock (Gary), Ward Blanchard, Dave Cochrane and Eva Blanchard; former daughters-in-law, Kathy Meyers and Lucy Nguyen; step grand children, Mathew (Annie), Amber and Kayla Meyers (Kyle Youden); as well as very large circle of nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family and friends that were very special to him.

Gordon was predeceased by his parents, Walter Cyril and Mary Theresa Brake; sisters, Matilda Sooley, Rosalyn Brake-Patey, Vivian Brake; parents-in-law, John Thomas and Minnie Rhoda Blanchard; brother & sisters-in-law, Isaac Blanchard, Rufus Blanchard (Sheila), Bertha Blanchard, Maysie Blanchard, Dave Caines & Rhodena Cochrane.

A special mention to his friends/extended family at Coppermine Beach and Taylors Brook cabins. He loved his time spent at both places and cherished the many card games, visits, fires, fishing, hunting, food, a lending hand, music and laughs over the many years. His last few years at the cabins would have not been possible without you all helping when he could not do for himself anymore. He truly loved his time spent there with you all.

The Family would also like to extend a heartfelt thank you to the doctors, nurses and staff at The Cancer Centre and Intensive Care Unit at Western Memorial Regional Hospital in Corner Brook for the care and compassion you showed Gordon and Family over the past 14 years and weeks leading up to his passing. Thank you.

As per Gordons wishes cremation has taken place.  Visitation will be held on Saturday August 5th, 2023 from  1:00 - 2:00 pm at Fillatre’s Funeral Home 218 Curling Street, with the Funeral Service at 2:00 pm, officiated by Rev. Mickton Phiri, a brief reception will follow. 

 As expressions of sympathy in lieu of flowers donations can be made to the Canadian Cancer society in honor of Gordon.

Gone but never forgotten. You can rest now, no more pain and suffering. Until we meet again. R.I.P. our beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, cousin, brother-in-law and friend.
