Obituary of Germaine Andrew

It is with great sadness that the family of the late Germaine Andrew (Shanamen Antane) announce her passing on July 27, 2023 at Chicoutimi, QC, at the age of 73.

Born at Grand Lake, to Matshiu Ben and Maniaten Antane (nee Gregoire), Shanamen lived the first decade of her life in nutshimit, travelling with her parents and family. Shanamen and her late older sister Mani-katnen Nuna, were the oldest of 16 brothers and sisters; the late Charlie, Greg, Ben, Alex, Guy, Eric, Patrick, and Max, the late Elizabeth, Paula, Martha, Justine, Clem, and Anastasia. 

Shanamen met Clayton Head in Goose Bay, and they lived together in Sheshatshiu where they raised their family. Leaving to mourn with fond and loving memories are her: four children; Marty (Geraldine Penashue), Terry (Christine Basile), Michelle, and Diane Andrew (Jonathan Feldgajer). 12 Grandchildren; Nicole Selma, Shipiss, Hannah, Alex, Germaine, and Matshiu Ben Penashue, and pre-deceased by Mary Adele Penashue; Alanis, Christopher, and Summer Basile, Bailey Rich-Andrew, and Nikamun Feldgajer; 9 Great-grandchildren; Madison, Lucas, Savannah, and Cole, Mckenna, Callum, Sofie-lynn; Layton, and Lya; and her first, Great, great-grandson Elias;as well as a large circle of aunts and uncles, nephews, nieces, and other relatives she was proud of, and loved greatly.

Shanamen was celebrated as the first SIFN member to professionally retire in 2016, after 26 years serving her community under the band health department. Her good nature, warmth and spirituality was felt by everyone she knew.

Viewing will be held at Fillatre’s Funeral Home, Happy Valley - Goose Bay, NL, on Wednesday, August 2nd, 2023, from 2:00 - 4:00 p.m.

The Funeral service will be held on Thursday, August 3rd, 2023, at 1:00 p.m., at Tshitshitua Shushep church (Our Lady of Snows) in Sheshatshiu, NL, with Father Joe officiating. Interment to follow at the church cemetery.
