He is survived by his loving sons: Christopher Doucette (Maria), Stephen Doucette (Brooke), and Raymond Doucette; a cherished grandson, Andrew Doucette; devoted brother, Fred Doucette (Phyllis); caring sisters: Ellen Griffin and Margaret Farrell; sister-in-law, Ida Doucette; brother-in-law, Albert Bergeron (Pierette); close friends: Tony and Florence Newman and Joy Boland; in addition to a vast circle of nieces, nephews, other relatives, and steadfast friends. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Marie Denise Doucette; his parents, Raymond and Faith Doucette; as well as his brothers, Bob and Jerry Doucette. The family extends gratitude to the staff of Westmount Estates Retirement Community for their exceptional care, and to the compassionate team at Western Health Palliative Care Unit for providing solace during his final days. Heartfelt appreciation is also extended to all those who touched his life.

Born on November 11, 1928, Gene was a visionary entrepreneur, a gifted artist, and a dedicated businessman. Initiated into the family enterprise by his father (P.R.), Gene commenced his journey in a tinsmith shop. In later years, when P.R. acquired Dhoone Lodge in Stephenville Crossing, Gene played a key role in its management—overseeing the lounge, guiding fishing and hunting excursions along the west coast, and leading a group of loggers in felling and floating timber down Harry’s River to Stephenville for Bowater’s Mill.

In 1973, the family established Doucette Sales as the premier distributor for Labatt’s on the west coast. Additionally, they founded Esquire Ltd., which facilitated the creation and operation of the Checkerboard Club Restaurant, Esquire Tavern, and Country Kitchen. Gene also spearheaded the construction of the West Coast Clinic (now known as the Qalipu Mi'kmaq First Nation office) and Premiere Apartments on Fudge’s Road. His creative spirit extended to music, poetry, and painting, adorning his surroundings with his original works.

A staunch supporter of Marble Mountain from its inception, Gene embraced skiing with fervor, often descending the slopes with a distinctive cowboy hat purchased during a ski trip to Colorado. In 1975, he assumed the role of regional sales manager for DH Howden/Pro Hardware, crisscrossing the island to assist independent store owners. In 1978, Gene relocated his family to St. John’s, fostering their education while operating a Pro Hardware store in Bidgood’s Plaza, Goulds. He took immense pride in supporting his wife and sons through university, celebrating their accomplishments in science and nursing.

Unveiling yet another facet of his talents, Gene authored and scored a musical set in wartime Newfoundland, depicting the romances and marriages of American soldiers and local residents in St. John’s. Composing a suite of songs for the production, he recorded and aired them on CBC Radio, performed by St. John’s musicians. Returning to Corner Brook in 1988, Gene's music remained a constant companion, frequently shared with guests who visited his home.

In his final years, Gene divested his business pursuits, channeling his energy into projects and cherished time spent with loved ones. After a brief illness, Eugene Allen Doucette passed away, leaving a legacy that continues to inspire.

An interment ceremony is scheduled for Thursday, August 24, at 2:30 p.m., located at the summit of the Roman Catholic Townsite Cemetery, Montgomerie Street, officiated by Bishop John Corriveau. A celebration of Gene's life will follow at the Blomidon Golf Club from 2:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m., warmly welcoming all who knew him to share anecdotes and camaraderie. Donations in his memory can be directed to the SPCA or a chosen charity. Condolences can be shared in the family guest book or memorial donations made through the website www.fillatre.ca.
