It is with great sadness that the family of Barbara Downey (nee Randell) announce her passing at the age of 91 on Saturday, September 23, 2023. She leaves to mourn, with fond and cherished memories, her children Maureen Barry (Gary Perry) in Corner Brook, Bernard (Anne) in Calgary, Patsy Sutton (Don) in Corner Brook, Paula (Dave Bradley) in St. John’s, James (Michelle) in St. John’s, Elizabeth Doody (Derek) in Corner Brook, and Robert (Leonard Rose) in Newmarket; 21 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren; brother John (Ina); sister Elizabeth Snow (Wilson); special nephew Melvin Randell (Carol) and brother-in-law Bud Pittman; as well as a large circle of family and friends.

Barbara was predeceased by her husband of 50 years, Anthony Downey, her parents Hezekiah Randell and Gwendolyn (nee Gillingham), stepmother Gladys (nee Nichols), sisters Rita, Clarice Clarke (Hubert), and Dorothy Pittman; and brothers Fred (Pauline), Calvin (Isabelle), and Ronald.

Barbara was a beautiful woman, a loving wife, mother, and grandmother. She embraced her long life with a quiet sense of humour, enduring strength, and enthusiastic pursuit of life’s enjoyments. In her youth, she loved to swim at Deer Lake Beach. In later years, she shared her love of dancing and bowling with family and friends. In quiet times, she loved to play the piano.

At Barbara’s request, cremation has taken place. Visitation at Fillatre’s Funeral Home (St. Marks Avenue) will be held on Sunday, October 1, from 2–4pm and 7–9pm. A funeral mass will be held on Monday, October 2 at 10am at All Hallows Catholic Church, Humber Road with Father Edward Terry officiating. Interment will follow at Mount Patricia Cemetery.

Friends and family are invited to express their condolences by making a donation in her memory to the charity of their choice.
