December 21, 1935 – September 28, 2023

It is with great sadness, the family of the late John Joseph Downey announce his passing on September 28, 2023, at the age of 87 years.

John was a kind and loving soul; he always had a story to share and often with great humor. He took pride in his family and loved them deeply. John lived a colorful life spending many years working as a hunting guide, scallop fisherman, and later a fish and wildlife conservation officer. He was compassionate, generous, and willing to help anyone who needed it. In later years, he was still active and enjoyed the outdoors and spent much of his time hunting and fishing. 

He was predeceased by his wife Vivian Marguerite Downey (nee Gastia), parents Alexander and Margret Downey; sisters: Rita, Maude, Bride, Marie, Helena; brothers: Frank, Richard, Albert, Gerald, Walter, and Vincent. 

Leaving to cherish his memory are a large circle of nieces, nephews, great nieces, great nephews, and great- great nieces and nephews. Special friends Lorraine Madore, and Ann Hawkins, his home support worker who became like family. Although he did not have children of his own, he had a few special nephews (Garett Quilty and Glen Downey) and a niece (Amy Quilty) who were very close with him. 

Cremation has taken place. Visitation will be held on Sunday, October 1st at Saint Columcille Parish, St. Fintan’s from  4:00 PM – 6:00 PM. The funeral mass will be held by Father O’Quinn at 2:00 PM on Tuesday, October 3rd at Saint Columcille Parish, St. Fintan’s. Interment will follow at Highlands Cemetery.
