Obituary of Elsie Elizabeth Chubbs

Please share a memory of Elsie to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Elsie Elizabeth Chubbs (nee Rumbolt) on Sunday, November 5, 2023, at the age of 84 years.

Elsie was born on August 26, 1939, to William and Mary Rumbolt of Mary’s Harbour. She left home in the spring of 1961 to work in Fox Harbour and later that year married Cyril Chubbs. It was there they built their life together and raised a family.

Elsie ran her own business for 15 years, worked as a housekeeper and a cook, ran a boarding house, and opened her home to host the first medical clinic in Fox Harbour. Her last job was in the fishing boat with Cyril. While doing all of that, she worked tirelessly for her family and no matter how many things she was trying to do at the same time, she never complained. Her home was always open for anyone who needed a place to stay, always room for one more, she would say and there was never a shortage of cooked meals.

Elsie also made a significant contribution to her community, which included extensive participation in the Anglican Church Women(ACW).  She never hesitated to get involved in whatever was happening and she was always there to help someone in need. Anyone who knew her, knew that she gave often and she gave plenty. As children we were often told that you’ll never miss what you give away.

Elsie is predeceased by her parents William and Mary Rumbolt; parent in-laws James and Gertrude Chubbs; siblings John Rumbolt, Pearl Edison, Gerald Rumbolt; brother-in laws Cecil Edison and William Rahal, and sister-in-law Florrie Chubbs.

Leaving to mourn with many wonderful memories are her husband Cyril; children Jeffrey Rumbolt (Sandra), Lucy (Doug Warren), Marilyn (Reg Hutchings), Todd (Beverly), and Peggy (Bill Penney); grandchildren: Christie(Matthew), Sara(Tristan), Michael(Andreana), Lori(Russell), Niki(Patrick), Julie(Patrick), Jamie(Dallas), Mckenzie, Luke, and Logan; and, great-grandchildren Lily-Mai, Finn, Nate, Kaiden, Rachel and Theo. Also leaving to mourn, her brother Harvey (Doretha), sister Edith, brother-in-laws Warrick Chubbs(Elaine) and Graham Chubbs, as well as many nieces, nephews and friends.

A special thank-you to Happy Valley-Goose Bay Long-Term Care Home staff for their wonderful care over the last thirteen months. Their compassion and support during Mom’s last days was very much appreciated.

Visitation at St. Mark’s Anglican Church, St. Lewis, on Monday, November 6, 7:30-8:30. Funeral service will be held on Tuesday, November 7, 1:00 pm.
