Obituary of Donald Mitsuk

Please share a memory of Donald to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

Donald Hayward Mitsuk born on July 4, 1949, in Hopedale, Labrador to Abia & Mary Ann Mitsuk.

Brother to 11 siblings, Ted Webb, Eric Webb, Harry Mitsuk, Chesley Mitsuk, Susan Vandorpe, Tilly Surette, Millie Martin, Edna Mitsuk, Ruth Mitsuk, Elsie Norman & Barbara Spearing. Also, numerous nieces and nephews.

Don, Donald, donny, dad, grandpa, pop, as he was mostly known.

Donald moved with his family to Happy Valley-Goose Bay shortly after he was born and lived there for many years, working as a guide seasonally. That's one thing that he knew, Labrador. He was a true Labrador man, if you needed to go anywhere on the land, he would be the person to take you. A dear friend, Gary Shaw said "Don was a master guide, an absolute professional. He wasn't just in the country, or on the water, he was part of it. It somehow flowed through his veins and in some strange way he simply flowed through it, together as one. I often said that they must have invented the GPS using Don's brain"

Don had two children, Dwayne (Brenda) and Lori (Joe) and three beautiful grandchildren, Hayley(Mike), Nathan(Joette) and Emerson, who were his pride and joy. He spoke about them the most. Nothing brought him more joy than knowing they were happy, healthy, and okay.

Donald moved to Labrador City, where he bought a house and called home, working in Voisey's Bay, until he retired. There were so many people that knew him, including his two great friends and neighbors Sylvia and Howard Freake. They weren't only his neighbors, they were his family. Dwayne and I cannot thank them enough for their kindness, love and friendship they gave him in the 30+ years they lived next to each other. He absolutely loved his friends, and spoke of them quite often, it was nice to know he had so many friends in his life.

Donald became sick in early 2023, after numerous trips to the hospital he finally drove back to Happy Valley-Goose Bay with Dwayne to be closer to them. His heart was in Labrador City though, where he really wanted to be. He was admitted into Hospital on November 7th, 2023, transferred back to Labrador City Hospital on November 25 where he spent his last days with his friend Sylvia, son Dwayne, daughter Lori and sister Millie by his side, passing away in his sleep on Thursday, November 30 at 0330am.

The funeral service will be held on Tuesday, December 5th, 2023 at 2:00 pm from the Anglican Church, Happy Valley-Goose Bay, NL with Rev Amber Tremblett officiating. Interment to follow at the Moravian Cemetery in Happy Valley-Goose Bay, NL.
