I was deeply saddened to hear about the passing of Mr. Thistle. He was not just our neighbor across the street on Forest Drive, but a beloved member of our own family as well as so many families in Steady Brook. My Dad was a single parent of 5 girls so Dad called on "Blackie and Sylvia" many times to help him out over the years. And they were there at the drop of a hat. It is hard to put into words the impact he had on our lives and our small community.
I have so many childhood memories of him. Firstly, we both shared birthdays. Sharing a birthday with someone creates a unique bond, and in our case, it was a special connection that I always cherished. He made me feel special and seemed to make a bigger deal about mine on that day!
Oh gosh, I also remember when I was small he seemed like a giant to me, both in stature and in his kind-hearted nature. His tall and handsome presence always made an impression. I fondly referred to him as Mr. T, drawing a connection to the iconic TV show the A-Team. While Mr. T-histle didn't possess gold or big muscles; he had something even more valuable - a heart filled with love and kindness. He showed us that true strength lies in compassion, empathy, and prioritizing the needs of others above oneself. Mr. T-histle truly went above and beyond in embodying these qualities.
Who could forget him as a true family man who for 72 years put his wife (Mrs. T) and family first. I believe he was born with a Ph.D. in teamwork with Mrs. T and his commitment for his family, all evident in everything he did.
He surely had a quiet yet humorous nature. He had a way of making everyone around him feel very comfortable and smile, and his witty remarks never failed to brighten our days. His (sometimes dry) sense of humor is truly unforgettable.
I remember well when he retired from his full-time permanent job. (I believe it was at the mill.) I remember overhearing Dad saying that it takes great courage to leave a secure job and pursue a passion. Mr. T took that leap of faith and joined Mrs. T in building a successful gardening business. Their dedication and hard work not only transformed their own lives but also brought nature's beauty and joy to others in the world and especially within our community.
His example inspired not only my Dad, but also some of our other neighbors to leave their secure jobs and pursue their own passions as well. Years later I left my secure banking position to purse my own dream of nursing. Mr. T's legacy will continue to live on through the lives he touched and the inspiration he provided. His courage and determination serve as a reminder to us all that it is never too late to follow our dreams and make a difference in the world.
Mr. T was indeed an unwavering pillar and a strong foundation during his service on SB council for years. He retired with a reputation of consistently extended a helping hand, he shared words of wisdom, and provided unwavering support to his neighbors during times of need. I'm sure after he retired from council and the secret code WWBD (What Would Blackie Do) made navigating difficult decisions much simpler by providing a clear compass to follow. His absence was profoundly felt, and the void he leaves behind is truly immeasurable.
Mr. T was truly a remarkable man. As I reflect on the memories shared with him, I remember the love and guidance he provided to me. Though he may no longer be physically with us, his spirit will continue to live on in our hearts in many unforgettable ways. May his soul rest in peace, knowing that he made a positive impact on all of us.
With heartfelt condolences,
